This was a good dark ride. It actually had some dark evil looking imagery inside and out, which is rare in the age of family first attractions. I didnt know much about this ride going in, especially that they actually have people inside to help with the scaring. On my ride there were 4 people inside of varying scaring committment levels. The first guy I passed looked like he was trying to avoid notice, like a concert roadie or something. The second guy made some kind of weak noise that barely got my attention and when it did I just laughed at the feeble attempt at scaring. The third person actually touched me on the arm lightly, also good for a laugh, but little fear. The last guy though, made a better attempt to come out with a little passion and gave out an evil laugh, but by this time this element of the attraction was more cause for laughter than fear. This is the only dark ride that I have ever ridden that had the personal touch to it, so I had to respect that. I think it would be great fun working this attraction trying to scare people all summer.

I was pleasantly suprised by Dantes Dungeon. The sign posted outside states that there are live actors inside the ride, so I found myself constantly on the lookout. I only ever saw one guy in costume and he spent as much time outside the ride as he did inside. Some great, realistic props can be found throughout the ride and it has it decent length to it. While waiting in the queue, I saw everything from smiling little kids to a girl literally hiding under the front of the car coming out.

Im not basing my review of Dantes Inferno on the fact that its one of the only dark rides left. I think Dantes is awesome, its probably my favorite ride in all of Wildwood. Even when Castle Dracula was around, Dantes was like the underdog I had to root for. First of all, the facade is really cool. Many dark rides have big monsters protruding from the front, but "Dante" has got to be one of the coolest- huge wingspan, breathing his boogers on the line below, and his tremendous pitchfork (Im not exactly sure if the pitchfork is still there). Plus the two moving three-headed dragons on the towers. The painting is brutal, although I think I remember it being more gruesome years ago. The upside-down demon face with the moving eyes, and the chilling "abandon hope all ye who enter here" message scrolled across the entrance way. Plus it has two levels and crash doors which lead you outdoors a number of times. My favorite part as a kid was the strobe-lit "techno room" (as I called it), right when you re-entered the ride after the downhill outdoor slope. There is always the threat that a live actor may be wandering around in there as well, keeping you on the edge! Dantes is an over-looked classic. Im excited (and slightly nervous) to see what Moreys has done to "re-theme" the ride for the 2004 season. Guess Ill see this weekend!

UPDATE- What happened? I went to Wildwood last weekend and checked up on my favorite ride. While I knew renovations were made on the ride I didnt expect what I saw. First of all, the entire facade has been re-painted. No real complaints here, except its new and will take some getting used to. One of the 3-headed dragons on the towers was missing (hopefully just getting repaired) which was a slight eye-sore. But the interior had been changed drastically. It seemed like half of the stunts had been removed, and others werent working. The glow-in-the-dark airbrushed lift hill at the beginning was completely dark (and boring). What was only a year ago a great darkride chock full of stunts and visuals is now a shell of its former self. I hope the renovations are still in progress and what I witnessed was not a final product.

The best dark ride in Wildwood since the Castle Dracula fire? In my option yes.
However the ride is under going major renovations and will be very different in the sprig
of 2004. The entire structure has been removed and the rides facade will get repainted
and the interiors will be rethemed to the book Dante’s Inferno. For photos of the Dante’s
Inferno project go visit www.mrboardwalk.net

This is a pretty good dark ride, perhaps they could add some live actors, I would probably wet my pants!

A nice dark ride with some interesting effects. Not state of the art by any means but it still provides a good bit of fun

Its really lame..... That a town that had so many good dark rides no only has one left... the Dantes Inferno. The Inferno was by no means the best Darkride in Wild Wood. Top ratings would go to the Wacky Shack (RIP) followed by Dradulas Castle Dungeon Boat Ride (RIfrikkenP), and then the Golden Nugget Mine Ride. Unfortunatly when Conklin Shows bought Hunts Pier for a short time they got rid of the Wacky Shack and just last year (2002) Draculas Castle was burnt down by the Mafia or perhaps Jewish Lightning (Im so not buying the "two kids did it" story). Of course there was also "Frankensteins Castle", "Dr. Morbids House of Horrors", and Moreys "Haunted House" walkthrough but I was too young to enjoy them before they burnt down or were taken down. As for the ride in question, Dantes Inferno, its seen better days. In the 90s most of the original beautiful Italian props were replaced by lame American props such as the stupid "Electricution death metal mosher guy" prop and the freddy krugger prop with the strobe light. I really doubt there were any electric chair moshers or freddy kruggers in the Dantes Inferno book so they completely ruin the theme of the ride for me. I also strongly dislike the newer paint job that this ride received by Senic Designs. The original Italian paint job was extremely gory. It had demons with pitch forks which would impail the back of someones head where the tip of the spear would push out the persons eyeball. It was all very Lucio Fulci-esk which delighted me to no end. The Senic Designs paint job is pretty much void of any violance, it rather stinks, I really hate it.
Anyway, its a real shame that this is the last darkride of Wild Wood which works. Sure theres still Dr. Morbids House of Horrors on Sports Land but it hasnt operated since the very early 80s. I recently found out from "Anthonys (the hermit) Wild Wood site" that this ride sports beautiful Bill Tracy tricks such as the stone skull w/ bloody eyes. Theres also The Golden Nugget Mine Ride of Hunts Pier but it hasnt run since the Dinosaur Beach lottery ticket winners ran it (and that was like 4 or 5 years ago???) The Nugget has since been sighted on a used ride brokers website and so its doubtfull it will be used again. Wild Wood is deffinatly not as cool as it used to be. Perhaps the beauty of Wild Wood is forever locked in the past with my childhood.
