Review of Big Bad Wolf @ Busch Gardens Williamsburg
3 Rating Posted by: CoastrGlxy on 9/29/2005 12:35:00 PM
The Big Bad Wolf is the perfect example of why I love Busch Gardens Williamsburg. And its not even the parks best coaster, but it does give you an experience that would be hard to find anywhere else. A suspended terrain coaster that flies through a Bavarian village then dives to a river. Try finding that in the Coaster Capital or in California. After dropping off of the short lift hill the train seems to be suddenly possesed with a violent intense amount of speed that seems to come out of nowhere. It still surprises me everytime I ride it. Maybe its common for suspended to seem faster than they are but it makes 45mph feel a lot faster. As you swing through the village (built just for the ride) you can see lights on in windows and other props that add to the effect of a village in fear of the wolf. Next the train comes out of the village, slows to a crawl and then hits the next lift. The second, much longer lift used to have speakers with wolves howling unfortunately I noticed they had been removed on my last visit. Big Bad Wolf feels pretty isolated even though its right there in the park. This is thanks to BGW having so many trees and the rolling topography. Finally, you crest the second hill and dive towards the Rhine River. Right above the river you swoop to the left, take a few more swinging turns and youre back at the station. So why only a seven? The ride is a little rough and may be showing its age some. It also feels a little short even though its much longer than a lot of rides. Also, on a night trip through the village I wasnt as blown away as I used to be, though I couldnt put my finger on why. Overall though, the Wolf is still way more inventive and interesting than your average steel coaster. I wish more coasters were themed this well. FINAL GRADE - 7.5 (Good-Approaching Great)

coastrG- another solid review. IMO you are carving out a nice niche for yourself on this site. i havent been on BBW in ages, but i cant wait to try it again so i can compare now with then. it used to really impress me as a young-un, and the fact that many are saying this ride is rough now is also drawing me back to williamsburg. i will always be a fan of suspended coasters. wacky good idea somebody had over at arrow.....

Thanks for the props. It really is a unique ride. I feel like the night ride was a little less spectacular than it used to be. I dont remember seeing any of the houses in the village lit until the end as youre going to the lift. Its like there was a blackout in Little Bavaria. Another reason I was dissapointed was b/c it was my wifes first time on it and she missed most of the village. Maybe theyre conserving energy because its late in the season.

I never noticed the lights in the village...but then again, the first time I even rode it was just last year. I bet that would have been an awesome effect

How do they light this at night. I havnt riden it at night. it in more standard lights or theatrical moon shaded lighting.

Youre going about 40-some mph so I couldnt really analyze the lighting except to say that some of the windows of the buildings are lit. It gives you the idea that people actually live in the village. There may be some laterns on the outsides of the buildings too, but I couldnt say for sure.

Thanks for the info you were aboe to give. Hope fully they work on this to smooth it out. cant be worse then the corkscrews.

The Wolf is kinda rough, but at night, that roughness adds to the experience, I think. Its a brutal ride...but its addicting

Ride one of the origanal Corkscrews or any Looping Corkscrew from arrow. those are rough rides. It likely woulndt hurt then to overhall the track.
