Review of Mission: Space (Orange) @ EPCOT
-2 Rating Posted by: Berlin on 10/31/2003 6:42:00 AM
Okay, it´s more than understandable that Disney was in desperate need for some new rides, given the fact that Epcot (which is supposed to show an image of the future, if I got that right) seems like a "Back to the 70s" exhibit nowadays and there are so many great rides that opened up closeby -in parks owned by competitors, that is. And what did they build? A lame simulator ride with its main "power" of pressing you against your seat, wow, every better thrill ride at any smal country fair gives you the same experience. Well, maybe without the theming around it, but, hey, it´s really a mistery to me how much changed since Space Mountain, as far as the Disney-plastic typed "Spaceship" interior is concerned... Not much, apart from being not that run-down, well, could be because it´s newer :-) What really makes me sad is the way Disney tries to sell it and the amount of money they say was spent on it. I just can´t see where all that has gone, apart from the pretty neat bulding (that´s why I don´t give a 1, by the way). Hey, come on, it´s nothing than a large centrifuge -my chemistry class teacher used obe of these things back in Highschool and it´s nothing sensational about bulding a bigger one and let people sit inside. Oh, and about what you actually feel: Weightlessness -no way, just raise your arm while riding and you´ll see that it will come down in no time. If you want to experience a short sensation of real weightlessness just go on any old-fashioned drop-tower around. It feels like really going on a trip to Mars? Well, I doubt that there´s anyone around who can really compare :-) And, just think about it, if astronauts need weeks of training for this highly strenuous task (as they tell you before you board your capsule), how could some Disney ride even come close, given the fact that almost any tourist that comes around is allowed on board? I´m not a big friend of any simulator type rides, but with the first one that REALLY works just a few miles north at IoA (oh, I loved Spiderman)this "great new attraction" is just a shame for Disney.

I think you must be a real young kid probably in the 12-15 yr old range while your comments seem well thought out it just seems you miss the theme and the overall intent of the ride. You look at the ride like a child with no thrill and spills it automatically gets a bad rating. Good thing you didnt say that in Berlin you could get arrested.

You gave TT a 3, and MS a 2...do you have something against Epcot or something? Way to bring down the rides rating too.

Haha, what a moron. He loved Spiderman, but absolutely hated this ride. He said it wasnt intense enough. Spiderman is in no way more intense than M:S.

I havnt been on it yet but I bet its better than 2!!!!! The theme topic alone would give it a 7 from me!

Same here, BUT, he did give good a good explanation for it and I cant bash someone if they back a bad rating up with a good review. I rated his review good, even though I dont agree with the rating

Chill out man. Its just a ride. You should rate rides based on how fun you think they are, you really dont have to get into all of the technical stuff. Havent been on M:S yet, but it sounds kind of fun (although Im not that fond of simulators).

You say that its nothing more than a large centrifuge. Actually its multiple large centrifuges with ten ride pods on each of them. The pods have multiple independent axes of rotation in addition to the spin around the centrifuge core. No, you dont actually experience free-fall, but the combination of a sudden stop of the high-G spinning and pod axis rotation gives a sensation unlike any drop ride. Besides, I dont know of any other ride remotely like this one. You complain that its just a centrifuge but even if that was accurate, you still dont find centrifuges available to the public.

I agree with Swimace. If someone gives a ride a bad rating, yet spends a lot of time reviewing the ride: Its a good review. If they explain why "they" didnt like it, then why should "we" beg to differ? Its one thing to give a ride a one and say "It was stupid." Although I have never been on Space, I know its gonna get an 8+ already. To say someone isnt allowed to not like a ride is unfair.
