Review of Cyclone @ Six Flags New England

I have been riding the Cyclone since its opening week. It is a good (but not great) ride. The rides pace is uneven. Basically, it is series of good individual stunts, like big drops and speed turns, with slow sections in between. It is worth standing in line to ride, but once you get off, few run back to the line to ride again.

On reflection, I removed my comment about the two deaths in case the rumors werent true. However, supposedly 1 person fell out and another suffocated when he/she threw up. After the person (alledgedly) fell out, they installed cumbersome seat belts (later removed) that really slowed down the line. The tree was a big oak with cables around the trunk that anchored one side of the ride to the ground. I was amazed that they would anchor such a big ride to a tree. At the time coaster publications claimed that the then Riverside Cyclone was designed to resemble the Coney Island Cyclone.

but why was it anchored to a tree? that seems a liitle odd.

You will have to ask them that. My guess is that it was cheaper than putting in a concrete or steel anchor. At the time (83), Riverside noted that the Riverside Cyclone (which had cost $5 million) had cost them 10 times more than the Thunderbolt had cost when it was built, so perhaps they had put a priority on cost control.
