Review of Cyclone @ Six Flags New England
0 Rating Posted by: palwine on 7/6/2001 3:28:00 PM
After spending a day at the former Riverside (now Six Flags New England) I felt obligated to express my thoughts on the Cyclone. Ive enjoyed the Cyclone for many years-- the OLD Cyclone. What right did Six Flags have in destroying this coaster? They completely changed the 1st drop--no airtime, no sick turn, no feeling that the ride is completely out of control. And to make it worse you can see the old track still in the frame of the ride below the new track...a rude reminder of what the ride used to be. The 1st drop used to be amazing! As a result of the shorter drop, however, the ride now runs faster than before. Could someone please tell me the reason(s) SFNE had in making this change? Was it to make Superman the best coaster in the park? Why not leave a classic alone?

The new ptc trains were being beatin to death by the rides roughness in that area.

what was happening was the trains were battering the coaster and the coaster was battering the trains.

Eh...The Mogan Trains were Horrid..These new trains ae pretty and also but no s bad as the Morgans. This coaster Needs Millenium Flyer Trains.

What this coaster needs is to be retracked. As we know SFNE is not going to do that anytime soon. So what the coaster needs is to be demolished!! Put a nice new CCI there in its place like The Villian OR Roar. That would be great improvement over a Beaten up Cyclone! Ive been to SFNE 3 times this year but I havent even gone to that side of the park. How long are the lines on cyclone this year??

like 5 mins...and No..I would hate to see it Demolished...by the way..some of it has bee re tracked this year It is a bit smoother. Although..they put in another Trim Break after the 4th hill.

Why did thay put another brake there for? I already did not like the one at the end. Im not a cyclone fan but the ride does not need any more brakes.

Yeah, they put the 2nd trim
brake in right before that lateral filled Turnaround, It actually may be an improvment..since thatsection got re tracked for this year its alot smoother. The Trim Brake is very weak compared to the one at the end though..you have to sit around the back to even feel it.

From what I heard, the reason for the reprofiling was that the stresses generated by the train going over the first banked drop was stress-fracturing the structure requiring frequent wood replacement. As I recall, the first few weeks back in 1983 when the Cyclone first opened, the cars were PTCs just like the Thunderbolts. Then, following a rear-ending accident Riverside replaced the cars with Morgan trailor-style trains. When Six Flags returned newer PTC cars to service, they must have had to reprofile the layout in order to make it work. There may have been insurance issues as well which dictated the work.
What I feel Six Flags should have done to compensate for the less aggressive hill was to locate, refurbish, and utilize classic NAD "Century Flyer" trainsets....the ones made of stainless steel and feature headlights, a bullet noses, and heavilly padded bench seats. The coaster would then be amazing once again.
