Review of Top Spin @ Astroland
1 Rating Posted by: Horizons12 on 4/1/2007 11:17:00 PM
This Huss "Top Spin 2" was a bit less intense than I thought it would be but still better than many Top Spins Ive been on. We kind of didnt get a the full cycle that includes a lengthy portion devoted to just swaying the gondola back and forth, teasing it into a flip every now and then. Ive also seen a video where the ride-op flipped the gondola some 14 times in a row which is a real testament to the level of insanity that this ride can potentially reach. Instead the ride did a few loops with some great hang time and then the ride-op pulled off about 5 consecutive flips. The flips were the most forceful Ive ever encountered on a Top Spin. The colors on this TS are like tye-dye, which is much nicer than some others Ive seen. This particular Top Spin gets some extra percentage points for having a custom backdrop. The backdrop features an airbrushed Hulk Hogan ripping his shirt off among other things. Ill make sure to ride this again come summer to see what a full fledged cycle is like.

EDIT: I went on the Top Spin again and I got a completely different type of cycle this time around. Before going on I watched it first; while watching Id hear people around me "whoa..." in unison during a particularly nasty set of flips. The ride experience itself was really just out of control swinging with the brakes never being fully applied. Occasionally the gondola would flip over while we were being unmercelessly spun. On a few occasions the gondola would come over the top facing downward and continue facing downward as it approached the loading platform. The visual was that of a large orange platform with the words "Top Spin" written on it rushing toward us before we swung backwards. There were a lot of moments where I was even pulled up off the seat as the gondola whipped over the top rightsideup; they had those arms going so fast! At points I had to close my eyes in order to not get too dizzy, which works for me. But if I felt the gondola shift in a weird in a weird way I would immidiatly open my eyes to see what type of wild, twisted scene Id see. Of course, as the ride ops last hurrah, we got about 6 fast backward flips before ending. All I can really remember from the ride was seeing flashes of ground, an orange platform, blurs of lights, and Hulk Hogan ripping his shirt off...and yes I was conscious the whole time lol. Ill have to pump this up from 9 to 10; that was one wild ride.

I believe this may be the first review to emanate from TPC Con I. While the Timber clan will always be proud to have attended that epochal event, history will record that, with a few notable exceptions, the flats across Coney Island were not yet operating at peak form on this opening day. Im guessing that most are a little tentative while working out the kinks, but the ride ops will be going for the gusto in a in a month or so as the weather warms and the crowds swell.

Was this the time I rode with you, Brian? That ride was insane. I was able to walk off relatively okay, but when I rode later that summer with my honey, oh my god it was OUT OF CONTROL. I actually had to sit down for a time, feeling impossibly old and incapable. Then I saw some other folks who had just gotten off, as well - I was not alone. That is one hell of a ride, and I really hope it ends up finding a home that is not too far away after the closing of Astroland. It would be great if the ops could travel with it, too - but no betting on that one...
