Review of Laser @ Dorney Park
1 Rating Posted by: Hercules on 11/11/2004 2:18:00 PM
Im not really too fond of this ride. I have heard people say that this is Schwartkopfs best work, but I dont buy it. It is the worst coaster in the park. There are some parts that I enjoy, but Im not that big of a fan. I hate how you cant pick your own seat. I dont think I have ever been in the front. And if you ask, the attendent gets mad and says that you have to go where they tell you. If you sit somewhere other than where they tell you, they get mad. I do like going upsidedown with just a lapbar. That is cool. The lift hill is so unbelievable slow. It takes longer to get to the top, than the entire duration of the ride. The first drop is pretty cool. Then after that, nothing great. The ride does get really super intense though. Those turns are crazy. There are people that say that they have actually blacked out on this, but I have not experienced that. This was actually my first looping coaster. I was 7. I was so scared that I cried all the way up the lift hill. However, nothing to be scared of here, especially since I went on it again right after that. Im not really too fond of the wood blocks that this right is set on, or the fact that water is used as a weight. Yet, Im not a ride designer or engineer or anything. When going to the exit, once again, the walk to it is like the lift hill--longer than the actual ride. Overall, this ride is short and intense. The drop into the double loop is fun. The twists and turns pack a mega punch. But, this ride is nothing great, but in turn, it is nothing really too bad either. UPDATE: I have a new found love for this ride. Rating changed from 7 to 8.

Hercules, I cant believe it, a 7? Dude, this is one of the greatest compact loopers anywhere, and its in your home park. Short, yeah, but super-intense. I know what you mean about not getting to pick your seat though. I hate assigned seats on any coaster.

Herc, what other rides (if any) at Dorney have assigned seating. If there are quite a few, the park may just get a phone call before I head up there

Bob, I think Laser is the only Dorney coaster with assigned seating. The line is really slow because they only run one train, so I guess they want to make sure they fill it up. In these situations, I usually just let people ahead of me so I can get the seat I want. If Im not mistaken, Thunderhawk, which incidentally kicks ass, still runs two and lets you choose your seat.

Thanks Timberman, I just wanted to know, I dont want to travel all that way just to get "stuck" wherever they can "fit" me. I ike choosing seats, but your strategy may be used. It looks like a pretty good coaster no matter what... oh, how I love Schwarzkopf loops. Thanks again.

Sorry that I didnt get back to you on this. First, yeah a 7. Im not really into this. It is very intense, I will give that. You feel forces the entire time. The lift hill though... talk about a yawn. You cant pick your own seat and if you try to the ops get mad because they are power trippy. Sometimes they even get mad if you wait it out like you said to do. It just isnt my kind of coaster. And the way it is set on those wood blocks and has water weighing it down in spots is a little unsettling for me. The line does move fairly slow with the one train, and yes, Thuderhawk runs two trains and you can pick your own seat. I actually cant remember it being anyother way to tell you the truth. Maybe way back when I was a little guy when they had the old station and I just cant remember.

I just figured that I would let people know that I updated this. I dont know what I was thinking giving this ride a 7. I have a new found love for it. It really is a very good ride and I hope they dont get rid of it too soon, eventhough I think that there is a good chance (eventhough there are a lot of people the disagree with me, but you will see).

I just found it hilarious reading through your review, Herc...you were saying how the ride is mediocre and how it isnt all that great, then all of a sudden "UPDATE: I love this ride!" I know the same thing happens with me though. After getting it stuck in your head that you dont like a ride so much, the next time you even bother to ride it, youre bound to find something you really like about it. I did the same thing with Rebel Yell this year...
