Review of Pittsburg Plunge @ Kennywood

Pittsburg Plunge was the staple of Lost Kennywood when that area of the park opened in 1995. The one water ride at Kennywood where you are assured to get wet on, and in most cases, drenched! A perfect replica of the old-time shoot the chutes ride. Quite simple really: Boat is lifted 50 feet, turned around, and plunged into the lake below. Nice size wave and good soakage in any seat. Not the tallest of its kind, but still an excellent ride thats loads of fun! The setting for it in Lost Kennywood is truly marvelous!! (Many dont know that this was actually how the Old Mill ride used to end in its early days!)

While it is perfect for the Lost Kennywood setting, and replicates what the Luna Parks were like, this ride is not actually a shoot the chutes ride, but close.

Really? I didnt know that. I thought that was what a shoot the chutes ride was - just up and then back down. Do you happen to know what they really were? I must admit Im curious now! And, youre right, Lost Kennywood does do a good job of showing what the Luna Parks were like.

The now common splash down rides are often confussed for a shoot the chute ride. The splash down ride is designed to land heavily in the water to create a large splash. A shoot the chutes ride is actually much different, it slides down a wooden ranp at a shallow angle so that the boat will skip across the water at the bottom.
