Review of Voyage @ Holiday World
2 Rating Posted by: BobFunland on 5/21/2006 12:31:00 PM
The Voyage came with all the hype in the world. It was the most impressive assemblage of stats for a wooden coaster in years, and going into an enthusiast-friendly park? Oh yea, you can bet there was hype. As the ride opened, pretty much everyone came back saying it was just superb to anything else on earth, adding to the hype. Once I finally rode, I was EXTREMELY let down. First off, the coaster markets itself as the #1 airtime coaster on the planet, but the airtime is neither as strong nor abundant as proclaimed. Raven has better air in multiple places, and Legends first drop is also superior to anything on Voyage. The terrain mode is fun and all, but there are coasters that execute it much better (ie Boulder Dash). The 90* turns did little for me, and the ride just was a bummer to me. The triple down in the tunnel, the part I was most looking forward to, also let down a bit in the fact that even with one train, the midcourse just takes a lot out of the ride and the triple down just isnt as hair-raising as I might have thought it would be. Still, my favorite part of the ride though, and it was cool to ride it once in the morning with the lights on Overall, the Voyage just falls a bit short, which is a shame because it seems like everytime I open my mouth about the ride, its construed as hating it or being phony, whereas I just WASNT blown away but I still really enjoyed it.

BobFunland: I appreciate this brave and honest assessment. Did you get to ride it throughout the day? It seemed to me to really cut loose as the day wore on, and by five oclock, the train felt like it wanted to go airborne during the last section after the brake run.

i only made a comment earlier regarding your tepid response to voyage because a backlash against popular rides is inevitable, and to me the backlash feels as disingenuous as the hype. our country encourages individuality, yet "me too" mentalities are dominant. when one person goes "yahoo" someone else chimes in "yahoo". when someone goes "poo poo", sure enough somebody else "poo poo." your review seems heartfelt, though. i appreciate the details you included.

Timberman - We rode it first thing in the morning, first in the front then in the back. I liked the front better, some in our group liked the back better. We then rode again twice later in the day, the first time around 1PM and then again closer to $PM, all three laps later in the day came in the back. It did speed up (a light drizzle all day probably helped too) but I didnt get a signigicantly better ride by any means, the sensations felt much the same just slightly exaggerated at best.

From the video I saw the Brake run did seem to stop the action but after seeing how fast it seemed to get at the end I could understand it. The brake seems a bit needed and the end planed around using it. Now air time are you comparing it to Floater of ejector air time?

I have to agree with your airtime rating. Even though it was experienced it didnt provide near the amount to consider it superb. Like is said in my review it was floater and it wasnt real heavy. I wish the wood coaster manufacturers could make a train which could reduce excess side to side motion, but maybe these trains work best for wood.

I have absolutely no idea how you were not getting air. Maybe it was just not running good on those days. I had floater and and good ejector air on the back stretch. If that brake run was not there you would die. The train is so fast by the end who cares if they had to slow it down. Great ride and by no means is my enthusiasm meant to disregard someone elses opinion.

The train was extremely fast by the end and as i think about it i may have received some decent air nearing the brake run, but my body was being pressed side to side so much that it could have distracted my experience.

"I have absolutely no idea how you were not getting air."

I never said I didnt get any air, it just wasnt as abundant as billed, nor as strong as most other CCIs.. ie Rampage, Cornball, Raven.. heck the best moments of air were about on par with Silver Comet, another "9" to me.

That was more toward Embalmer, but thats ok. Raven has like two pops of Air and Cornball does have really good air, but not nearly the total amount delivered on Voyage. The air on the triple down is unbelievable and the ejector air coming down the back stretch after that is available on every bump. I am not trying to change anyones opinion, but I felt it totally delivered on its advertised air.

Im not sure what your classification of "air" is. I mean, Raven had a couple of ejector moments, and Cornball had one, but Voyage constantly delivered pounding air [or at the least floater air] on every hill. If youre saying that the air wasnt abundant because it lacked the true "WHOA!" moment, then maybe youre correct, but I dont quite understand that assessment. Oh, this isnt saying you need to bump it to a 10 or that youre wrong in your review. Im just wondering how you can compare consistant good -> very good -> great [depending on your point of view] throughout a ride to one or two spots of wicked air [as Im to understand Raven/Cornball bring to the table].

OK, I understand the Raven concern - I dont know, for such a pathetically shot ride, it really delivered a lot for me. I dont know, it just rubbed off better and impressed me a lot more than the Voyage. As for Cornball, I dont know if you had some bad rides on it or what, but I got several doses of insane ejector, not just one... the first drop was nice, the drop by the lake was insane, the drop out of the turn near the lift and then the other drop out of the helix were all just incredible in my mind... not a one trick pony, and easily the most complete and wildest ride up in that neck of the woods for me.
