Mission: Space
Submitted By: ThmPrkCrtc on 4/30/2002 9:37:00 AM
The new Disney attraction due out next May of next year was though to have been canned after a countdown timer was removed, turns out not to be the case.

"We did take down the countdown clock, but there isnt any delay with the construction of Mission: Space," said Bill Warren, a Disney World spokesman...

...Mission: Space will add another E-ticket ride to Epcot, complementing Test Track, the high-speed car ride that opened in 1999. Industry observers say it will also be Disneys answer to The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man ride at Universal Orlandos Islands of Adventures.

All I can really say is that it took them long enough because IOA was beating their butts ride wise!!!

I doubt its TRYING to be better than Spidey. My guess is ... it is there answer to a UNIQUE and HAVE-TO-BE-SEEN experience.

Spidey is unbelievable and has yet to be matched. INDIANA JONES EXPERIENCE is unbelievable and has yet to be matched. THE BEAST is unbelievable and has yet to be matched.

There is room for many at the top. For Disney, MK has its "mountain range," AK has DINOSAUR and KILAMANJARO (sp?) SAFARIS, MGM has TOWER OF TERROR and ROCK-N-ROLL COASTER ...

but, TEST TRACK is a strong showing at EPCOT, unfortunately it is the only overly strong showing at EPCOT. Everything else there is nice, but can quickly bore the younger crowds. That's why TEST TRACK's line is always soooooo insanely long. Even though the wait is nuts for Spidey, imagine how stupidly long it would be if there was no HULK or DRAGONS or RIPSAW FALLS to also hold your attention.

The technology is finally right that EPCOT can now give less of a "tour" of the world and its possibilities and more of an "experience." Personally, I'm looking forward to MISSION: SPACE eagerly (hoping to grab a sneak peak at one of the upcoming IAAPA shows closer to the 2003(or is it 2004) opening date). Quite frankly, I'm also looking forward to Disney getting wise a lil bit and adding some more rides to WORLD SHOWCASE at EPCOT. River of Time is nice (anyone else see it as SMALL WORLD meets IF YOU HAD WINGS), and Maelstrom is good fun (but short) ... but please, give us something more back there. NIAGRA FALLS flume ride for Canada (in a barrel)? ROMAN MYTHOLOGY dark ride for Italy? GREAT WALL coaster for China? Any of those sound good to anyone???
