I'm planning on going to Kennywood early this spring, most likely on a Saturday sometime in May. It will be my first visit, which is kinda sad considering I live in PA but anyway, is it crowded on Saturdays early in the season? Where is a good place to eat? What flat rides shouldn't I miss? And any other tips welcome.

hit up all the coasters and some of the more historic flats (like old mill). all the woodies are pretty much walk ons all day (i went in june on a weekend) but PR does get crowded although im not sure if they are still only using one train as they were when i was there which really cut down on capacity. exterminator also gets a good line but it has an air conditioned queue/ride since its all inside but its well worth the wait- it has the best theme of any wild mouse, and ranks up there with all other coasters. the food at this park is great (for theme parks) and is really cheap (again, for theme parks). cant really think of other things to say. its a small park so there wont be too much walking and, i guess, have fun!

Remember, you can bring your own food in.
If you must go on a Saturday (it's less crowded on Sunday BTW) run right to the Exterminator. It's lines get really long as the day goes on, and it's located in the very back of the park so less people go there first.
Have fun, it's a really great park.
BTW, usually what they do with all roller coasters (except Racer) here is start the day off with 1 train and if the park is crowded they'll add another, they did this with all the coasters when I was there.

Well, smk, Kennywood is my home park (and favorite park!), so I'm your dude for Kennywood info. Saturdays usually are not really that crowded even in June or July, so since you're going in May, I think you should not have any problems. So long as the weather is good, the park will likely stay open until at least 10 or 11. They have been known to stay open later on some busy Sat. nights. Just fyi, here's some other helpful hints to consider for a trip to Kennywood:

1. Show up early. The gates open at 10:30, but crowds are often VERY light until after noon. You can get plenty of rides in during this time!!

2. Ride Phantom's Revenge!!! I truly feel this is one of the more underrated hypers out there. And, they are now able to do 2 train operation, once the lines start to get long. I was there one time last year, and I rode it 5 times with my longest wait being about 20-25 min.!!

3. Potato Patch fries are awesome and a must for a trip to Kennywood. But, in Lost Kennywood there's a food stand called Small Fry that serves the same exact fries, but with way shorter lines!! Other great food choices are Park Avenue Pizza (near Kiddieland), the chicken fingers (by Jack Rabbit), and the Cafeteria (superb sit-down meals for reasonable prices....I love their turkey dinner!!)

4. Ride The Exterminator early; lines tend to get rather long as the day progresses. They can often get longer than PR.

5. When riding The Racer, extend your arm out when passing the other train. You'll get some high fives!!!!

6. When going on Jack Rabbit, try to get the very back seat. If you sit there and put your hands up during the double dip, you'll literally be STANDING!!!

Personally, I don't think there's a bad coaster in the park, they're all top notch....and 3 classic woodies! If I had to rate the coasters though, it'd be (from tremendous to very, very good): Phantom's Revenge, Thunderbolt, Exterminator, Jack Rabbit, and Racer.

Some must-ride flats are: Aero 360, Pitt Fall, Gran Prix, Kangaroo, Bayern Kurve, Auto Race, Old Mill (nostalgic), Noah's Ark, Swing Around, Turtle, Raging Rapids, Pittsburg Plunge, Log Jammer, and the Whip. But again, all the flats are enjoyable.

Plus, don't miss the new Volcano Valley themed area, featuring Pirate, Volcano, and the brand new King Kahuna! Some of this info you may know already, but I figure if you don't this could be useful info. Have a good trip!!!

My Kennywood trip was delayed, so I'm actually going tomorrow. Unfortunately that means I have to miss Coaster Madness up at Dorney today. But anyway, thank all of you for your great tips. I'm leaving at 6:30 in the morning tomorrow so I should get there by opening time! Heh, I'm excited

Here it is--

We left a little after 6:30 a.m. and arrived at the park about 20 minutes before opening time. When the gates opened, we headed to the bathrooms and then straight to the line outside of the entrance of Phantom's Revenge, waiting for it to open. It started the day of just running one train. We waited about 20 minutes, and I was not dissapointed. The ride was short but I loved it, and it moved into my #5 slot. After a second ride, we headed over to the Thunderbolt, which was a walk-on in the morning. The lateral G's and the airtime was fantastic! After this we headed to the other side of the park, and rode Aero 360, the Racer, and Jack Rabbit. I loved Jack Rabbit especially, that double drop is just insane! We then took a spin on the Exterminator, and we ate lunch at the Potato Patch -- great cheese fries (thanks PhantomNik!) We then rode Phantom's Revenge some more, and eventually Volcano and King Kahuna. I sat on the end, so I got a nice mist without getting soaked. After this we did more re-rides. All in all, we rode Phantom's Revenge 10 times (they had started running the second train in the early afternoon -- short lines!), and Jack Rabbit about 5 or 6, and Thunderbolt 2 or 3. We left the park at 6 p.m. I would have loved to stay and take some night rides (especially PR, Jack Rabbit, and Thunderbolt) but by that time we were all nice and tired. Kennywood has an extremely nice atmophere, and a lot of trees (I love lots of trees at an amusement park), good food and good rides. I was a bit surprised at how short the lines were considering it was a June Saturday. Overall, I had a great time!
