Yesterday was a great start of the season for Knoebels. Unlike past years, it did not rain on opening day, and in fact was absolutely beautiful out.

Just some quick highlights:

My first ride of the season was on the Flyers, where at the end of the cycle I scared myself witless by almost hanging the Flyer. The cable caught the back and sent me spinning for a brief moment. Scared the heck out of me, but it was fun. Lots of folks were hanging around at that moment, so if anyone actually got a photo of that (I know there were a few cameras out) can you pass it along to me, I would love to know exactly what happened there.

Twister was running very well, not quite as fast as the end of last season, but pretty good through the helix and had nice pops of air at the top of the second hill and the top of the helix.

Pheonix was running OK. Plenty of airtime as usual, but there was a nasty little pothole at the bottom of the first drop.

Looper had a long line all day. They really picked a winner there, folks seem to love the ride.

The Flying Turns are starting to take shape. When you see it in person, you can see just how much work there is to be done, it is going to take a while. I talked to Lenard Adams for some time, and he explain alot of what is going into the construction of the ride, and gave us an overview of what the ride will look like. Also he said the ride will go right out to the midway and infact jut out into it a bit. Many of the trees that were there before are also staying put, they really took out only stuff that was dead. The ride will come very, very close to some of those trees. The trains are being designed, they are going to try and creat a restraint system similar to that on the Mack bobsleds, with the T-bar. They are afraid, though, that the insurance may make them go with OTSR's because of the closeness of the structure, but they are trying to avoid that if they can.
Here are some shots of the construction:

Dick explains how the layers of the coaster are constructed.

Here the third layer still has to be installed.

An information booth with construction photos, the track plan, and photos of some of the old rides has been set up.

Sounds like a good time. Speaking of those trees, took out numerous loads of braches and trunks Thursday, it was fun, ha! Yeah, the Turns should be a very interesting ride, but I have heard from a few guys with the job that if its open for Octberfest, they are doing good. I dont really mind when they open, as long as I get on one of the first few rides. :-)

Saturday was pretty busy for the opening day; I dont think you could have asked for better weather. Next time you stop at the park, you should give me a holla!

I was going to go to Knoebels today but my brother had baseball pictures and apparently my cousins, aunt, and uncle will be camping out there next weekend. So I'll be getting there early Saturday, then talking for a while and making it out to the park with my cousin and her friend for a long time, getting back to our campsite then waking up early, hanging out around the campground, then back to Knoebels for the day.

Also, I have a question about the park's openings. I've never been there before the park opened, but do the shops and restaraunts open before the park/rides and stuff since there aren't gates or anything?

I headed out his morning with my brother-in-law and niece. I was at the park from noon-6 and enjoyed the 2 for 1 wristband deal. At $21 dollars for 2, that was only $10.50 per person.

What do you get for $10.50 - I got
8 Flyer rides
4 Skooter rides
3 Phoenix rides
3 Twister rides
1 Looper, High Speed Thrill coaster, Rockin Tub, Downdraft, Tea Cups, Tilt-a-Whirl, Fandango

The three of us also paid an extra $3 each for the new 3-D theater simulator. There are 4 different shows and we caught Cosmic Coaster and it was enjoyable to watch although the seats are a little uncomfortable.

The International Food Court is open for breakfast. I believe 9-2pm. The only thing that opens before offical opening time is Minature Golf, which will open an hour before the park opens.

BTW - I'll be at Knoebels all weekend and I promise to take tons of pictures of the construction and so on. I just bought a 512 MB memory card for my camera specifically for this occasion, so on the highest quality I get 617 pictures and on the lowest I get 1800.
