Hey, folks -

Just fulfilling my duty as a Coney Island Polar Bear, by reminding you guys that our 105th annual public swim will take place on New Year's Day, at Stillwell Avenue and Riegelmann Boardwalk. This year, we are raising funds in support of Camp Sunshine, a charity that benefits children with terminal diseases. If you wish to take part in this great cause, please visit
http://www.polarbearclub.org/
- there is information on our official site to guide you in the right direction. We will be hosting a meet-and-greet breakfast beforehand at the New York Aquarium, at 11am.

Of course, you can have ALMOST as much fun by participating as a spectator - the sight of so many happy people doing something so totally nuts is always a great eye-opener to start the year off with! Expect plenty of fun, laughs and thrills... and heck, maybe you'll even end up totally hooked on the cold water sensation, just like I did on New Year's in 2006.

We hope to see you there!!!

You know, you are only young once. Will the shock of the water cure a hangover? I am considering this. Granted, I doubt I would spend more than 30 seconds in the water. Would I be mocked endlessly with such a short trial period in the water? I know you are going to tell me it is warmer in the water than sitting on the beach.

Believe it or not, it IS warmer in the water, often by a good number of degrees. Of course, there is the matter of being surrounded by that temperature in a totally different way.

I would think that it would be good for curing a hangover - I've never gone in like that, but yeah... if it can send stress and cares packing like it does for me every week, I'd say it's likely to do the same to the after-effects of drinking.

And I don't think anyone will hold it against you for staying in for 30 seconds. Besides, you never know how it will hit you - once you're in for that long, it sort of becomes moot to leave immediately - the endorphins kick in, and, at least to me, it feels really damned good. Regardless, I have to hand it to you for trying!

Also... it sounds silly, but consider wearing warm socks, wrapped in plastic baggies, inside your tennis shoes - the only bitch I had after my first swim was that my feet were frrrrrozen afterwards. Now I wear diving boots (wetsuit material) to protect my feet, and keep from stepping on God-knows-what.

The whole thing is a hell of a lot of fun, seriously. Also, one thing I love about Coney Island in the wintertime is that the water is so much cleaner than it is in the summer. And if you go, drop me a line - maybe we can get together there! I'll see you in for your first dip...

T-man - you are correct.

You know, you only go through mid-life crisis once.

adriahna - I have your e-mail so I'll send you and e-mail as it gets closer.

but let me get this straight, people go in the ocean with their sneakers on. If that's the case, I would have no problem wearing an old pair of sneakers.

Yeah, you can go in with sneakers on - that was what I wore the first time I took the dip. Well, that and a bathing suit...

Yup. As for me, another day at the beach - breakfast, the coldwater dip, party time at the Surf & Turf, then home with my fella for some salty bow-chicka-wow-wow.

Happy New Year, everyone!!!
