Let's give it up for the old geezers out there that are still getting it done.

What's the best coaster that pre-dates you? This will be a lot easier from some of us than others. Especially if say you're a launch/rocket coaster or hypercoaster fan. The oldest coaster in my Top Ten is Magnum. And I was 10 when that was built.

My top wooden coaster would have to be Thunderbolt @ Kennywood and my top steel coaster would be Loch Ness which just barely pre-dates me.

easy enough. 5 out of ten coasters in my top ten were built before i was born. the jack rabbit is probably the oldest ride in my top ten, though i think the original incarnation of the wild one may be a comparable birthdate.

aside from those only two are newer than 1989 - boulder dash and el toro. i have old fogey preferences it seems.

btw, there aren't many steel roller coasters older than me. maybe some schwarzkopf portables are older, and matterhorn bobsled for sure.

I think the Cyclone is the only one in my Top 10 built before this old fart was born.

I'd think Matterhorn and Bobsled (at Seabreeze) and than some small ones like HSTC and the like might be the only steel older than me.

My top 10 has many pre-John coasters.

There is the "Riverside" Cyclone, The (LC) Wild Cat, Sooper Dooper Looper, Lazer, Skyliner, and GASM (SFGA)

There are a few other Pre-John favroites, such as Thunder Hawk, Comet (Hershey), and so on and so forth

--------------------
Wild Cat(LC)2006 Ride Count= 151

B&M did not invent the inverted coaster, they took a suspended coaster idea and made it not swing.

Prefabricated Track is for losers.

5+ Years still missing the "Riverside" Cyclone

The Coney Island Cyclone is the winner for me here. In fact, it's the only coaster in my Top 10 that was built before I was born.

Phoenix, with the reservation that I haven't experienced Kennywood yet. However, Phoenix may still win out of convenience, price, and efficient operations.

I'm definitely going to agree with Jim on this one. Pheonix's definitely the best pre-me coaster I've ever been on. The airtime on that thing's crazy & it runs really good for being 22 years old. The price's just right for riding this precious gem of a wooden coaster.

It's much more then 22 years old, I believe it open first in...1947?

I meant in terms of how long it has been at Knoebels in Elysburg, PA. I know that it was built way back in 1947 as the Rocket at Playland Park in Texas, but it ended up being dismantled & relocated up here in the Northeast.

Since I'm 37, I was using the original opening date for Phoenix.

At least three of my favorite coasters, The Giant Dipper, The Jack Rabit, and Matterhorn Mountain Bobsleds (Full Name), were built before I was born.

Phantom's Revenge is one more of my favorite coasters. The Steel Phantom opened in spring of the year I was born. I was born in August.

So technically about half of the Phantom's Revenge is older than me, but the other half is not.

I guess that 3 1/2 of my favorite coaster were built before me...
What do you guys think?

Steel Phantom may or may not be older then me if it open in 1991, which I think it did, then if opened before 3:24 A.M. May 12th then it is older then me.

Wow, that cuts closer than my date! (7:00 AM Aug. 2nd).

So, then since the Steel Phantom opened before I was born, does that mean that its a pre-me coaster, even though I only rode Phantom's Revenge?

The Cyclone, by a long shot. The Phoenix takes a neatly distant second.

This thread brings me to another question. Anyone have any idea what the average age of coaster enthusiasts is? Obviously there are enthusiasts of all ages, but I wonder if it skews older or younger.

Don't know for sure but the average age of those talking about coasters online is much younger than the real average.

A site like TPR gives you the option to list your age and many people do. I would guess that half the registrants are under 20. But you go to an event and the average age is probably closer to 30-35.

10 of the 17 wooden coasters I have been on were there before I was born including my 3 favorites; Phoenix, Yankee Cannonball, and the Comet (Great Escape).

My favorite steel coaster built before I was born is Paramount King Dominion's Shock Wave.
