Can anyone explain to me what a Tobaggan Coaster is? Like the Avalanche at Kings Dominion. Thanks...

It's a coaster that runs in semi-circular trough as opposed to a real track. The cars look like little bobsleds with wheels on the bottom. Since the trains are not connected to anything, the trains can never do a fast or steep drop...otherwise it would turn into a ski-jump coaster. Heres a few photos of the Avalanche

It is just like a bobsled. If you have seen the Olympics you will understand it.

Is this a hint to what Knoebels could be getting in the near future?

Bobsled coasters look cool, and are also called Tobaggan coasters as well I guess. BUT, theres another kind of "tobaggan coaster" out there that does NOT look so cool lol, like the one at Conneaut lake, Chance tobaggan coasters like THIS.
is this a hint? lol. I don't know any other tobaggan coasters out there.

That thing looks like the Sky Slide. Ha! Someone said in another thread there was suvey marks around the Wirlwind lot, so I dont think they would survey for what ever that little thing is. I don't know if Knoebels would build a wooded tobaggan coaster, but it would an interesting ride if they did...I was just curious to what one was. Are these things popular?

Thanks for the help.

I heard the Chance Toboggan is a horific torture device...it sure looks like one. I was reading about somebody's ride experience on it and it basically went like this: You ride in this small Chance Skydiver looking car, get hoisted straight up the inside of the tower, spiral down slowing down at certain points, and then go through an EJECTOR BUNNY HOP.

Tobaggons - ouch ouch ouch.

I remember as a kid seeing twin tobaggons in HersheyPark, but I never rode one until this weekend. I rode the one at Conneaut Lake and the one at Lakemont Park (I know there is also one at Little A-Merrick-A in Madison Wisconsin. The one at Conneaut Lake is a true torture cmaber and will get a one rating when I get around to it. The one at Lakemont in in much better condition and might get a 3 rating if I feel generous.

Lado - when I first drove in Knoebels I thought Sky Slide was a toboggan coaster.

just wrote a TR - Tumble Bug, YoYo and a ride looking like a Scrambler (based on the cars) were not operating.

That was me who mentioned the marks around the whirlwind here, My last post at the bottom. Theres a pic and description of what I saw.

Also at this page at RCDB
they have a list of classic Tobaggan coasters, Figure 8 wooden side friction coasters. This would make alot of scense for knoebels to ressurect something like this, but what ever happened to that idea of the schwarzkopf looper with the wicked loopscrew?

I disagree. It would not make sense for Knoebels to add a classic ride, if it is not enjoyable.

Well, it sounds like those Chance Tobaggans aren't very cool.
We shall see what new ride Knoebels has in store for next year. But wouldn't it be cool if it was a wooded bobsled coaster? Anyhow, I am gone for now...

No Knoebels is getting a 200 foot Chance Tobaggan that reaches speeds of 75 mph and does a super ejector 10 foot high bunny hop at the end.

Oh geeze, don't start something like that because some of the new people around here are gulible enough to believe something like that.

I don't know, I just don't like a new coaster addition to the park for some reason. Something that a bobsled is ok, but I don't really like it that much. The same thing with that Anton gem that Cyclonic said is a possibility. No matter how much I really want to ride that thing, I just don't see it fitting in that well. I would just be happy with a bunch of nostalgic flats and such from them for a while, but it seems like it is not going to be that way. I'm sure whatever Dick has come up with is something special though. It will work.

I am not in the Knoebels cult as was mentioned in a previous thread, but I do really like the park. I will actually be making my fourth visit in three years and that is saying something since it is an 8 hour drive.

Well, I'm sure it helps that your number 1 coaster is there too.

I like the park, I'm just not really into it. I don't know. Good for those who love the place but I'll take Dorney anyday.

My top ten favorite parks is a weird group. I love coasters yet 5 of my top 7 parks have less then 4 coasters. I also like huge parks then small places like Adventureland Iowa. Oh well.

This thread was beyond dead. Just figured I would let you know that. The question was already answered, and that is what it was, just a question by someone who was curious about this type of ride. You really don't have to come in and say that you like that, especially months after this thread was shot.

Well, since this tread is back from the dead, for now, I did know something like a bobsled ride was comming in. I am just glad I heard right. There are so many rumors that float around down there, its hard to decipher which ones are true. I am just waiting for my mountain coaster.

Now, back to the grave!!!
