This coaster is a classic! Absolutely amazing. After all the years its been up, I still am blown away by it. You have no idea where you are going, which makes for a frenetic experience, and the theming is amazing! Oh and good ploy by having the exit go right into the arcade. I blew at least 20 bucks in that place!
I liked this coaster and thought it was a pretty wild ride for its age. The seat was very uncomfortable and the way I had to bow my legs out to fit made the lap bar feel a good bit less than secure.
This roller coaster just might be the most creative and imaginative roller coaster ever built. The building and theming are excellent. Also, it has a large capacity, and is up to the challenge of moving the HUGE crowds at Magic Kingdom. However, compared to the modern-day hypercoasters and other more intense rides, its just not thrilling enough.
Space Mountain was never intended to be an "extreme" thrill ride in the vein of say "Rock N Roller Coaster" or IOAs "The Hulk" or "Dueling Dragons". But you wont ever be able to deny how intimidating the black beast was to you when you stood beneath it in all its glory back in 1990 when you were 6. And still, Ive been on this ride over 2 dozen times, and everytime it is an enjoyable experience.
The only things I would probably attempt to improve on are the rides seating comfortability, and perhaps a more prominent soundtrack. A more involved cast of employees wouldnt hurt either.
I cant imagine what people would whine about in giving this ride less than a 10. Its been thirty years and NO ONE has even attempted to improve upon this ride. It is grand in size, theme, and delivery. EXCELLENT! AND, each Space Mountain in each park is different!
No big drops, no inversions and top speed 28 mph... so what! This is exhibit A in the power of good design. The indoor darkness + space effects, combined with the sudden dips, toilet-bowl spirals and sudden (and un-foreseeable) turns make this just a huge amount of fun. Maybe it just seemed this way in the dark, but it felt like SM was making 90 degree turns without slowing down a bit. I love a good hypercoaster as much as the next guy, but Space Mountain shows a coaster doesnt need mega-power to be great. [And btw: I was in Orlando in early September... ultimate non-crowds period for the parks there. Rode SM three times in a row in the middle of the day - no wait! Couldve done more. Same deal at Universal.]
Whew thank God I got a Fastpass for this one I remember taking a long time just walking through the line, which is very well themed. I loved the looks on peoples faces wishing they had gotten the fastpass as I walked on by. The ride was pretty fun too thanx to it being in the dark.
This was my first coaster other than lil kiddie ones so its a classic to me.
It was pretty fun, but it got real boring real quick. I was expecting a lot more, which probably made it worse. They should be glad they put as much theming into this coaster as they did. The theming was the absolute best part and builds 10 times more anticipation than the ride delivers. However, there are a few spots of airtime and some sharp turns, but the age of the ride balances these high-points out with spots of roughness.
GREAT COASTER! Who cares if it doesnt go upside down or 400 ft. high. The theming and the darkness and sudden drops make this coaster excellent. Space Mountain Rocks!(Fast Pass Suggested)
