Approaching Universal, along with the iconic green Hulk, Doom dominates Universal’s impressive skyline with its two distinctive purple towers. Well, Doom definitely is the best looking S&S tower I’ve come across from the color scheme to the ride’s entrance. I especially like the tower’s violent-looking cap, and while subtle, it definitely adds some power to the ride’s appearance. While lines were never at all long during my visit (15 minutes tops), I utilized the single-rider line which was great since no one else ever used it so I got on with no wait at all! This probably can be attributed to the fact that many don’t even know of the single-rider line’s existence or its location (it’s on the second floor of the arcade where the ride’s exit is).

Doom begins with a great launch sequence. Once locked into place, Doom reveals his evil scheme- he has created a new invention to finally defeat the Fantastic Four and it’s powered by our screams! This only heightened my anticipation for the launch, but not only that, it also made the launch a surprise. While on most S&S towers the launch is no longer a surprise to me since I can tell when it launches because of the sounds the tower makes, Doom was significantly quieter than other S&S towers and the audio talked over it leading to a very sudden and suspenseful launch.

Now honestly, I wasn’t expecting all that much from Doom in terms of the actual ride after many negative comments I had heard recently about the ride being dramatically less forceful to the point where there was almost no air at all, but boy was that proven wrong by my many rides. The sudden launch not only caught me by my unawares, but it was quite forecful. However, that launch possibly is overshadowed by the massive burst of ejector air I experienced at the peak of the tower, as it is definitely some of the strongest air I have ever experienced from an S&S tower. Really my only complaint with Doom is it’s incredibly short length, a downfall that cripples almost all drop towers.

Now overall Doom is definitely one of the best drop towers out there thanks to the incredible theming (both off-ride and during the suspenseful launch sequence) and great ride it provides. Not only is the ride itself great, but lines were almost nonexistent during my visit, making many re-rides possible on this thrilling attraction. While personally I prefer getting dropped down than launched in general, Doom is one of the best launched towers out there for sure.
