Review of Bizzaro @ Six Flags New England
4 Rating Posted by: shag9004 on 11/16/2007 1:54:00 PM
Date Ridden: June of 2007. Times Ridden: 7 with one ride in Row 2, 2 rides in the very back, and the others spaced out toward the middle and back. Where do I start? Ok, I guess Ill start with the crazy idea I came up with in March of this year. I had already ridden the famous Millenium Force and was bound and determined to ride what my buddy and myself call "The Number 1 Ride in the World". ROS continually defeats MF not only in the Golden Tickets but also in the much more accurate Mitchs Poll each year. I had to know what all the fuss was about. So I came up with the idea of riding both coasters within a 12 hours span. We started off leaving GA on a Tuesday night, driving all night to a small coaster place known as 6 Flags Great Adventure with a couple of "decent" coasters. I have done my El Toro and Nitro reviews so there is no need to get into them. Kingda Ka was great but still a disappointment in my book. Anyway, we stayed for 4 hours and then took off up the interstate with our google directions taking us to Agawam. In between, we worked our way across the George Washington Bridge in 5 Oclock traffic in which 12 lanes on one side of the toll booth were being funnelled into 4 lanes on the other side. We think of this incidently fondly as "The GW Car Orgy". This put us seriously behind schedule but we decided to head up to Superman anyway. By the time we got there, they were not even taking up money for parking anymore so with our passes riding Superman cost us nothing but gas to get up there. We were able to get in 7 rides in 90 minutes. As you can see from my ride tracker we rode absolutely nothing else in the park. We did not even walk around the park. We went straight to Superman, rode it until they made us leave, and then made it out to our car. We then drove another 8 hours to Sandusky (where we stayed for a couple of days in an actual hotel room with a bed to sleep in instead of a car with duffle bags as pillows in the back seat). Ok how about the ride? It is as great as everyone says it is. It offers unbelievable airtime, particularly in the back seat. It is smooth as silk and the pacing never lets up from the first drop into the tunnel all the way through the airtime hills going back, around the helix into the mist-filled tunnel and over the camelback humps at the end. It is virtually a perfect ride with a wonderful view of the park (it was the only way were able to see the entire park) and the river. We wanted to ride the front but with our limited time along with the huge line (about 20 extra minutes) we decided to get as many laps as possible. Plus on Intamin hypers, the second seat is almost as good since the seats on the back rows of each car are elevated. We were in the line for the 3rd seat but ended being offered the seats in the second row due to a group wanting to ride together. My favorite part of the ride is probably a part however that does not even contain any airtime. The helix that takes you on a dive into a refreshing tunnel of mist was probably the part I looked forward to the most on each lap. As far as airtime, which is what the coaster is about, the hill on the way back from the overbanked turnaround which takes your picture (I dont remember if it is the 2nd or 3rd) has the sickest amount of the entire ride. You are absolutely ejected from your seat on this portion. In conclusion, Superman ranks as my # 2 ride (although it is virtually tied with Millennium Force in my opinion...it may even be a little better but read my MF review and you can see why I list it as # 1) and deserves its Golden Ticket. Intamin has a winner with this one without a doubt. I look forward to getting back up to Agawam and checking it out again.

Let me be the first to thank you for this great review and for sharing the rich details of your cross country trip with us. Although I cant quibble with your top 2 coasters, I am surprised to see that Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce in Connecticut -- which competes with El Toro on the various awards sites for wood coasters -- didnt even make your top 10. Have you ridden it yet?

Very interesting story regarding Boulder Dash and thanks for asking. Our top 10 quest this past summer was for steel coasters only with the Golden Tickets (I know they are heavily biased but we had to use something as our guide) as the basis for our trip. We actually had a contingency plan to go by Lake Compounce if possible to ride Boulder Dash but the traffic problems in New York ruined that. As a great fan of woodies, it pained me to know that I would be traveling within 30 minutes of this highly regarded terrain coaster and was going to miss out on it. However, we are thinking about doing a Top 10 woodies trek this summer which would take us back up there after visiting Knoebels and then cross-country to Wisconsin Dells. It just didnt work out for us on this last trip but I really look forward to getting some rides on Boulder Dash. I will have to say that being able to say I have ridden Superman-ROS and Millenium Force within 12 hours of one another made our two all night drives worth it.

Need to get out to ride this one. Ive been on the other two. The hacked up restraints are a bummer.

At all costs ride it. I did not have a problem with the restraints. They do not affect the airtime at all and once you go around the big turn and head into the airtime hills you are not even thinking about the restraints at all. You are simply having a blast. Its a great ride. 1 of only 2 10s Ive given so far to steel coasters.

Are the restraints painful with the airtime?
shag9004 on 1/27/2008 5:01:02 PM said:
There is absolutely no pain involved at any point of the ride. I did not think the restraints in any way hindered any part of the ride. This is a top ride without a doubt. The restraints are a non-issue in my opinion.

The restraints arent painful. The ankle restraints can be a bit agrivaiting but I think it has a lot to do with your size. Im 5 5" and do experience some redness on my ankles form them. I find it more aggravating then anything else.

Heck, I give you credit for braving something far more painful than the most viciously head-banging coaster: rush hour traffic on the GW Bridge. Brrrrrr. :uhoh:

^^If Six Flags modified the restraints on this ride in the same fashion that they modified the other two SROS coasters, then poo-poo on them. Its not comfortable. Im ranking B&M hypers higher based on the jacked up restraints alone.

Although I feel sorry for the families of the riders that were ejected, the T-bar isnt a broken restraint. It combined with a seatbelt is as safe as any restraint out there. TTD uses this restraint system to send riders over a 400 foot top hat. The modifications to the T-bar are lame, lame, lame, lame, lame, lame, lame, lame.

uh....rush hour on the GW was definitely not intentional. That was a lack of common sense. In this age of technology, I almost never look at an actual map anymore. I usually just print out the directions from Google and head out. I learned a valuable lesson from that trip....looks at a paper map when dealing with large cities. For anyone interested go to google maps and check out the satelite images from the GW bridge......the traffic is horrible right now as I type this. 12 Lanes on one side is going into 3 lanes on the other.

Ginzo I do agree with you. There is nothing wrong with the T-Bar. I sometimes think that amusment parks and ride manufacturers simply have to do things they know are ridiculous to appease the general public when accidents occur. This is still a great ride though.

What modifications did they make to the tee bar?
mrceagle on 1/28/2008 12:06:05 PM said:
They added ankle restraints. Basickly its 2 bars that sit over your ankles at the bottom of the t-bars restraint. Turns it more in to an H-bar restraint. They also changed out the seat belts. they are now shorter which is a pain if your a bit overweight. and Have new seat belt connectors that are harder to disconnect but also harder to connect. slows loading down. They are uncomfortable and do detract from the ride a bit for me at least.
weaver23 on 1/28/2008 9:22:44 PM said:
Oh that sounds quite uncomfortable compared to the simple B&M restraints.
ginzo on 1/28/2008 11:01:45 PM said:
^Yeah, and Im pretty sure its just a Six Flags thing. The other Intamin hypers dont have this modification.
mrceagle on 1/29/2008 10:50:13 AM said:
I think so as well. I would have though a slightly larger lap restraint at the T section would have been as effective. Something a bit more like B&Ms set up.

B and M has the top restraint system on their hypers bar none. I have ridden Goliath at SFOG 28 times and have not once had an uncomfortable ride. I still dont think the restraints on this ride are that big of deal though. However, it could be due to the fact that I had not slept in over 2 days. I probably could have been tied in with barbed wire and not felt a thing.

You body configuration can also make a deference.
