Review of Magnum XL-200 @ Cedar Point

Until the opening of the Maverick, the Magnum held strong as the best ride Ive ever been on. It might be important to note that this was my first coaster ever, back in 99 or so. The first time totally scared me to death! Being only 11 and not having ridden any real coasters before this, I was horrified to feel myself being ripped from my seat for nearly the whole two minute duration of the ride. I clutched to the ride bar as tightly as possible and found myself hurting badly after getting off the train (leg cramps!). The next year, I rode the Millennium Force and found myself suffering from the same problem. I did try the Magnum after that, though. Not wanting to cramp anymore, I just let myself go. It was possibly the most exhilarating experiences of my life! Now every time I visit Cedar Point, I make sure to ride this classic multiple times. It simply has so much air time, its unbelievable. To begin with, the trains are really neat looking, if a bit cramped. The lift hill pulls you along nice and slowly, building up your anticipation and offering a prolonged view of the lake. The view here is best at night. The first drop is amazing, as is the second. The pretzel turn around gets some flack, but its pretty intense and enjoyable, albeit a bit shakey. Again, this section of the ride can be a lot more enjoyable in the darkness of night. The hills after the turn-around throw the rider out of his seat with insane amounts of ejector air. The second tunnel here is really, really cool: nice and dark with a surprising hill. Whenever I pull into the station, I cant help but think about how much better than the Millennium Force the Magnum actually is. While not as tall, fast, or smooth, the Magnum provides more air time and more character. A lot of people throw around the term character with regards to this coaster, but its really true. The Magnum seems to have a lot more personality than most other coasters, almost as if its a living entity. (That sounds cheesy, I know, but ride it right after the Millennium Force to see what Im talking about.) For a steel coaster, it is a tad rough, but I simply cannot lower the score for this alone. At worst, your thigh may hurt from the lap bars. The airtime sure does make up for this rather small inconvenience. Youre not going to wind up with back pain or anything like on a deteriorated wooden coaster. What you get is a wonderful, forceful steel coaster with a personality similar to a woodie. Anyone who is a fan of coasters should ride this one. The lines usually relatively short, so if youre visiting Cedar Point for fun rather than credits, ride the Magnum multiple times. It sure beats waiting hours in line for a quick ride on the (inferior) Top Thrill Dragster or even the Millennium Force (but dont get me wrong, I love the MF too).

do you like the magnum better because it offers more airtime?

Sorry I havent logged in for a while, so this response is quite a bit late. Yes, the airtime pushes the ride ahead for me, as does the view and the slight shakiness of the ride.

I will also try not to add the articles. Everyone in the Detroit area adds "the" in front of coasters names. I guess it just rubbed off on me.
