Review of Dragons Lair @ Dutch Wonderland

The Dragons Lair is a long and leisurely boat ride at the very front of the park. Seen from the road next to Dutch Wonderland, you can easily see the Dragons Lair giant brown rock it travels around. Located to the left of the main entrance, the Dragons Lair has you riding in 2 seat, brown boats. Generally, the Dragons Lair has a wait less than 5 minutes because they run many boats. Inside the boats are steering wheels, but they are just there for decoration. Dutch Wonderland dispatches the boats quickly. Riding around a large pond thats kind of dirty, you go around many twists and turns with a massive and angry purple dragon statue on the rock (their mascot Duke). The best part of the ride is when you travel inside the brief cave where Dukes dragon egg is. Its purple with yellow spots. However, the nice-looking rock and brief cave are the only good parts of the Dragons Lair while the rest is boring. Even worse, our boats motor shut off half-way through the ride so the boat behind us pushed my boat back to the station. You did get a very long ride though on the Dragons Lair. Overall, a leisurely boat ride that only people who enjoy boat rides should ride. This is a great relaxation ride. It would have been better if you could control the boats like on swan and paddle boat rides and not follow a designated path.

On my first visit to Dutch Wonderland in the 1970s the "lagoon" did in fact house swan boats. I forget if they were paddle boats or if they were powered... but you could steer where you liked... and there was no cave or dragons lair (this was in the days before Duke was the mascot of Dutch Wonderland). When your number was called over the loud speaker, it was your time to return. Not sure what year the Swan Boats were replaced by the track guided log boats of "Dukes Lair". I do remember seeing a picture of the "whale" boats that occupied the lagoon prior to the Swan Boats (not sure where I saw the picture... perhaps it was in Jim Furtell (sp) book on Pennsylvania Amusment parks)

I have the Pennsylvania Amusement Parks book and I know theres a picture there of either the swan or whale boats (I forget which). The old attraction sounds better than this one because you can actually control the boats direction.
