Review of Flying Witch @ Playland Amusement Park
0 Rating Posted by: Canobie Coaster on 9/18/2006 4:15:00 PM
APPEARANCE: I really liked Flying Witchs appearance as the giant windmill looks great and the witch animatronic also looks fantastic. The rest of the building is filled with some interesting and gruesome images that add to the aura of the ride. The cars themeselves are the standard plexiglass cars and nothing special.

WAIT TIME: Walk On- Just like with Zombie Castle, I have never had to wait at all for the Flying Witch. Also, the operator dispatches the cars relatively quickly.

RIDE: The Flying Witch was pretty good. The rides beginning was pretty unique as there was a small lift hill up a dark tunnel that was pretty creepy. Most of the stunts were similar to those found on a typical carnival dark ride; however, they were perfectly timed and because of this, some actually made me jump. I especially liked the final stunt which really made me jump.

FINAL VERDICT: This was easily better than Zombie Castle, but not nearly as good as the Ye Old Mill. Anyone who enjoys a good dark ride should give the Flying Witch a shot as its certainly better than the atypical carnival dark ride.

As good as Flying Witch is, the county plans to close it and Zombie Castle after the 2007 season. Laff In The Dark (laffinthedark.com)has posted an op-ed piece offering an avenue for people to make their opinions known to county and state officials on the impending removal of Zombie Castle and Flying Witch at:

This isnt a real surprise as both seemed more like carnival attractions than permanent rides. As long as Rye Playland keeps the Ye Old Mill (and I know they will), Rye Playland is set in the dark ride department.

Hate to break the news to you, but I heard last week from somebody in park management that the county is looking to get out of the dark ride business all together and that Ye Old Mills years are numbered. Im told that the structure leaks water by the gallons on a daily basis and that the insurance has sky-rocketed after that kids death. The estimate to overhaul the tunnel would cost the county a fortune -- so Im told. Also, the park wants rides where it can see patrons at all times, so the Hall of Mirrors is also being targeted. I was told the both the Mill and the Hall will operate in 2008 -- the parks 80th anniversary, then be removed.

Thats just tragic that Rye Playland will be probably removing the Ye Old Mill. The Hall of Mirrors wasnt that good last year so thats not a big deal. I hope that this news isnt true about the Ye Old Mill.

That Sucks. Im sorry to hear that bit of news... especially in regard to the Old Mill. Such a great dark ride - I hate to see it go...

I thought this ride was better then Yoshi let on. While it dose look very carnival on the outside it was a very enjoyable ride. the almost coaster like Run down to the end was very exiting. Zombie castle was also good but lacking a bit. The Rides could be great if given some TLC and A more Building looking outside in place of the carnivalistic front they have. s for getting out of the dark ride Business that woudl be a shame. Ye old Mis was the High lite of my trip. The coaster to be honest are nothing special and without Dark rides especially Ye old Mill. I will not go back. There is no good reason and at the Admission price of $40 dollars for an 8 hour wrist band there not worth it.
