Review of Storm Runner @ Hersheypark

Let me just cut to the chase on this one - I was disappointed by Storm Runner. Which is not to say that this was a bad coaster, because its not. But it was a disappointment nonetheless.

The line was not terrible, about 20-25 minutes, and we were sitting in something like the 4th row. I got myself all strapped in, ready to go, they come to check the restraint...and I am suddenly in intense pain. Not only did my ride op practically jump on the restraint for no apparent reason (I easily fit in the thing, I am not a big person) so that I was stapled in like a sardine in a can, but the restraint, seat, and seating position in general are not comfortable by any stretch of the imagination.

This is all very unfortunate, because the ride itself is really pretty cool. The launch is good and intense, the top hat, inversions, etc...all good. Except for that restraint. During the heart-line roll, I thought my legs were going to bruise from the pressure. Overall, it doesnt seem to me that the ride or trains handle their speed that well either in terms of overall smoothness. Its not rough in the same sense as an old Arrow or Vekoma, but the trains do seem to do their share of rattling, something one rarely finds on any sort of B&M.

My ride was more or less a 7, but I have decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and give it an 8. I was not able to get a 2nd ride in that day, and I am willing to chalk up at least some of my poor experience to the ride ops decision to restrict the movement of my legs to approximately 3 mm in any direction. But the trains are still an issue, as the rest of my family had issues with various parts of their body as well, including the groin, neck, and head. Note to Intamin - redesign the trains (Im not sure if this is an issue on the majority of their Accelerator coasters - most seem to feature lap bars, which were fine on TTD) on this baby and youll have yourselves a possible All Star.

I did say rarely. And yes, while some B&Ms will rattle, it just seems to me that their trains and style of track contribute to an overall smoother ride than Intamin makes.
