 Review of Soarin @ EPCOT
-2 Rating Posted by: Raptor on 1/25/2006 7:49:00 PM
Edit: My first review of this ride was very negative. But after riding it a few times, it grew on me. While its definately not worth the wait times it gets, in my opinion, its a good ride that anyone can enjoy. I dont think it should be classified as a thrill ride, but its so relaxing that youll feel refreshed after riding it.. especially on a hot Florida day. Dont get caught waiting in the hour long waits for this though. Make sure you get a fastpass.

It is an Interactive Movie so I dont know what you thought it was going to be. If they didnt cut to diferent lands when you are flying you could only fly over on thing. Now that would be stupid. I have been to many IMAX movies and in no way does that feel like soarin.

I have been to a few IMAX theaters and Soarin is so very different. I am a grown man and actually found myself lifting my feet up as it appeared we were going to touch the water. It was an awesome show and deserves all of the accolades it has received up to this point.

What were you expecting? It is similar to IMAX in that it is using IMAX film and is on a large screen like IMAX, but those movies are not meant to simlate first-person flight. While you get some first-person footage in an IMAX movie, you are not suspended above the floor, nor in the best seat in the house. Soarin puts you in the perfect position to view the scenery, and the other sensory effects add to the overall sensation of flight. I think it is awesome. It blows away any other motion simulator I have ever been on.

^Even Spiderman? Mission: Space? You mean that having your chair tilt a few inches here and there is really that amazing? A lot of IMAX movies have the exact same type of scenes that Soarin has. The only difference is that your chair isnt suspended and there are no fans blowing on you. I guess Disney should just stop spending money on high tech, innovative rides if all it takes to impress people is suspending them in front of a big movie screen and blowing wind at them.

[Gosh, I am a geek! :dork:] Actually, IIRC, one of the first IMAX films was called "To Fly", and it was indeed (partly) about simulating the sensation of flying. I recall seeing it at the Air & Space Museum in my youth (circa 1834). Even in normal theatre seats, IMAX films can do at least a little of that. I havent been on Soarin so I cant comment on how well it enhances the effect, let alone how it compares to other simulators, though. BTW, Is Soarin IMAX or OMNIMAX? The latter is basically the same except the screen curves, giving a more of a "surrounded by the image" feel.

Its more of an omnimax, but not fully one, if you know what I mean. Like it doesnt go above you.

Spiderman is not a motion simulator. It is a dark ride with just one scene at the end there there is motion simulation. Of course I like Spiderman better than Soarin, but the two rides are totally different to me. Mission Space...well that ride is more *thrilling* than Soarin, but even then I would say I enjoyed Soarin more due to MS making me feel weird for about 2 hours after the ride. Soarins field of vision totally envelops you. MS would have been better with 1 larger screen per capsule rather than 4 small screens per capsule. So, I take back that Soarin "blows away" all motion sims due to MS, but Id still say it is my favorite.
