Review of Hydra the Revenge @ Dorney Park
0 Rating Posted by: EagleUSA on 8/28/2005 9:50:00 PM
I finally get the chance to review Hydra: The Revenge at Dorney Park. Hercules happened to be one of my favorite woodies of all time so I was hoping it would be good enough to replace it. I sat in 3 rows because I rode it 3 times. Front row, second row, and back row. The opening Jojo roll was brilliant. I have never been on a floorless with that type of opening. It pumped me up a lot for that ride. Then we made the turn and up the lift hill we went. The drop was excellent. One of the best for floorless coasters. You hit loops and corkscrews and Zero G Rolls which were awesome. The helix was great for this ride too. I did not think this was that fast or intense. When we coasted into the station I thought it was a good ride but not perfect or excellent either. So I gave it a good rating. I still wish Hercules was there and that this replaced Laser or something else instead but I still liked this ride. I will settle with an 8 which I believe is reasonable for this ride.

What are you, my long lost brother or something? Welcome to the family. Lets see, it includes you, and well.... me, at least from what I know of. Good review. I too wish that Hercules was still standing. It wasnt that great of a ride, but the value of it in my memories is worth it to me. Yes everyone, that is right, I just admitted that Hercules was not that great of a ride. It was a great experience and a record breaker that really had something in its first few years though. It is a shame that it got to the point that the park would rather have a weak B&M in its place. One thing though: I agree with most of your points about Hydra, but it wouldnt have been as good of an engineering masterpiece if it were built in the space of Laser since the terrain in that area is not as crazy as that over where Hercules once stood. Hopefully Laser does not leave too soon, because then I would be sad that there would only be one member of the "Big 3" left in the park; Thunderhawk.

Good review, but I dont quite get it, you said the jojo was excellent, you said the drop was excellent, you said the inversions were awesome...and then at the end of the review you said the ride wasnt excellent I guess Hydra will never be "excellent" to anybody except me and Dorney Park fanboys

Thank you for the great complements. To me it was lacking speed and intensity. Yes Hercules is a classic ride which makes it even better then it is. I still wish it was there.

Hey hey hey now, Im a Dorney Park fanboy... just not the kind that you would associate the word fanboy too. Fanboys dont have to give every Dorney ride a 10, you just have to love the park. I dont agree with everything the park does and Im a fanboy. Dont judge ferg.

Haha, youre an informed fanboy...I was referring to the idiot-fanboys

I thought this was a lack luster coaster... kind of "ho hum". On the other hand, I liked Hercules. So, perhaps it was not so much that Hydra was lacking, but rather that, compared to what it replaced, it was lacking. As stated, had it replaced Laser (a coaster that so many rave about but I just "dont get"), then I would probably be one of those singing its praises. As it is, for me it doesnt live up to old Hercules force, excitement and even appearance (that hill side looks awfully empty and barren now).

Once again you have to understand this move was better for the park overall. Hercules was not overly popular with many people at all and there will be less people complaining about a rough and hurtful ride. Also, the cost of Hercules was absurd with the ridership being very low. The value of keeping the ride did not add up in terms of that. Just remember, this was the kind of ride that the park wanted. They proved that they could get an intense B&M with Talon, now they have something that a lot more people can appreciate and it appeals to the entire family (no matter how over hyped or advertised it is). Laser is currently the ride that has the highest maintainence costs and has a very low ridership, so it will be interesting to see when it goes.

I loved Laser, I hope they never get rid of it. But money comes first unfortunately. If they do get rid of the ride sometime in the furture, I think what Dorney needs most is a good GCI or Gravity Group woodie to replace it...maybe not in that exact spot because there probably isnt even enough room

I understand all of the reasons why Hercules went... I just said I would not have been "complaining" as much about Hydra had Laser been the one replaced instead of Herc.

I will second teh GCI or Gravity Group woodie to replace Laser.

SFLAKE - I hear you say that you dont get Laser, and I would like to know what you think its missing or why you dont "get it". I viewed it strictly as a portable coaster, and I couldnt think of one that was better. It was short but pretty sweet and true to Schwarzkopf fashion, featured one great drop and two great loops. Sure, its not much, but I see it as one of the best of its kind.

It is a portable and that is how it should be viewed. As for the Laser and wood coaster talk, check out my "Investigative Report: Dorney Park" in the rumors and speculation section for more on that in a couple of days. Im sorry for the delay on that by the way.

Not saying it is a bad coaster. It is a good to better than average coaster. However, I just dont get how so many rave that it is one of the best coasters on the planet and one of the better ones at Dorney.

Best coasters on the planet? Who has ever said that? I think that is a little bit of an exaggeration.
fergusonat on 8/29/2005 2:58:29 PM said:
Yeah, Ive never heard that one before LOL The reviews mainly suggest that it is a solid little coaster, but nothing fantastic, IMO

Over the past 5 or so years I have heard many (perhaps not on this site) rave about Laser over and above the others in Dorneys collection.
Hercules on 8/30/2005 9:15:33 AM said:
Ok. Sure, that makes sense that way. I belong to a lot of sites other than this one and I can see that statement making sense. I am also close with a lot of people that go to Dorney and with a lot of people that work there, so that statement is more clear. I can see how they can make that argument. You were just saying that they were saying that it was "one of the best in the world", which made no sense at all. I have also heard that it is one of Sir Antons best works, which I can see being true. Its all a matter of taste, and I really like Laser now and can see how people think it is one of the top coasters at Dorney. If not that, it really rounds out their collection very nicely.
