 Review of Whip @ Hersheypark

Whips are unfortunately an endangered breed of rides to some extent. While the concept of the ride seems very basic, almost no adult models have been built in recent years. I would say no adult models, but that would be a lie since Hersheypark’s Whip is the only modern example I can find. Located in Midway America, Hershey’s Whip opened in 1997. As one approaches the ride, one hears the very loud roar of the motor that easily drowns out the screams of younger riders. While the ride lacks the charm of older whips, this one still looks fantastic. Not only is the ride housed in a very nice pavilion, but each of the cars sports a sleek, green paint job that really makes the cars stand out. In all of my visits to Hersheypark, the Whip has always been a walk-on due to its decent capacity and location towards the back of the park. Despite being a modern take on a classic attraction, it still rides just like the traditional whips. Getting whipped around is quite amusing; however, this version just lacked the ferocity of older whips in my opinion. Usually I don’t pan a ride for being too smooth, but in a sense this one is too smooth since the whips are taken considerably slower than the versions I’ve been on elsewhere at parks like Rye Playland and Kennywood. However, the whips were still enjoyable and the ride’s cycle is pretty long. One other complaint I have about the ride is its incredibly boisterous motor. I could understand if the motor was incredibly loud and this ran fairly fast, but there is no reason why the older whips should be able to operate both faster and quieter than this modern one. While I still prefer the old school whips that I’ve been on over Hershey’s modern take on the classic attraction, I still appreciate the park’s attempt to resurrect a rare ride. While not one of the park’s best flat rides, I recommend giving it a spin during a trip to Hershey since it’s a pretty rare ride nowadays. However, if you are pressed for time, feel free to skip it since the ride itself definitely pales in comparison to the older ones in my opinion.
