Review of Laser @ Dorney Park
-1 Rating Posted by: Canobie Coaster on 8/23/2005 10:49:00 AM
Overrated in my opinion, but still worth a ride while at Dorney. Well its been said that Laser is a portable coaster by many and it certainly looks like one. From the horrid paint job to the temporary support structure, Laser looks pretty bad in my opinion. Unfortunately, the ops didnt let me wait for a seat and I instead was assigned a seat, which I abhor. Well, the layout was compact, which led to the ride being rough at times and I came off with a headache. The two loops were very powerful though, but the ride was very short. At least it was a walk-on all day.

I meant to reply to this long ago, but must have forgot. There are a couple of comments that stuck out at me:

"After riding Hershey Parks Sooperdooperlooper, I was expecting a ride like that, but the Laser is far worse."

Are you serious? Why do you consider SDL to be better? I mean, that thing crawls through its course and doesnt pack half the punch of Laser.. why you (or anyone else) would like it more is hard for me to fathom, but whatever I guess.

"...you get a nice view of the park."

You do? Of what, the parking lot and Little Laser? Please, I dont have the best of memory but I didnt think it was a terrific view or anything.. pretty average if you ask me!

" I only recommend this ride to people who are physically fit, and to people who enjoy roller coasters."

So.. youre not either of those?

To add to this: How could you expect a similar ride as Sooper Dooper Looper? This is a portable Schwarzkopf whereas Hersheys ride is a full layout coaster which is nothing like one of these. And yes, there is no view of anything - maybe the parking lot and the road and stuff like that. King Yoshi must have a giraffe neck or something. Either that or he can turn his head like an owl. And, it really isnt that rough. I mean, it will knock you around, but it really isnt that bad.

I was confused because he states almost nothing positive but still goes with the six.

Also if the headrests block the view of the ride how is the view great. Oh well you know hom Canobie parkers review things.

I enjoyed the Sooperdooperlooper more, because it had a more unique layout, since it was a custom-made coaster. Also, it had a better loop, and a better drop. Also, it was smoother than the Laser, and it had a very forceful, but smooth helix. Also, you were free to choose any seat(wait for it), unlike on Laser. I messed up my review for the Laser, so I revised it. I meant to give it a three. Now that I think of it, the view was terrible.
BobFunland on 9/27/2005 9:46:08 AM said:
A three? Thats harsh. Better drop than Laser? Hmm..... Better loop than Laser? Hmmm... Better helix than Laser? Hmmm...

Of course it has a more unique layout, SDL is a terrain ride where as Laser is a production portable ride, didnt you listen to Hercules? Sheesh!

I found the Laser very, very rough, and the ride was very loud. Also, the ride operators were very bad the day I went. They forced you to sit in whatever seat they told you, or get back in line. Also, they never smiled.
Hercules on 9/27/2005 6:18:10 PM said:
Well yeah, that is the rule on the ride, it wasnt the ride ops. I know it is stupid rule, but the ride is pretty good no matter where you sit. And loud? Most Schwarzkopfs are loud. SDL is just as loud as Laser anyway. Oh well, we all know that you have a weird taste in coasters anyway, so I guess we should just get used to it or something.

I dont like rough roller coasters. I like any roller coasters that are smooth. I can handle a little roughness, but this one was too rough for my to completely enjoy.
BobFunland on 9/27/2005 6:40:39 PM said:
Very very very rough yet you have Rockin Roller Coaster, Steamin Demon and Steel Force in your top 10 steel and Thunderhawk in your top 10 wood? Im sorry, I just think you have some weird standards for roughness. I dont think its an ultra-smooth ride, but I find it to be far from rough. Get on some more Vekomas and Arrows and tell me what rough is.

They have an odd operating procedure, yes, but does that really kill the ride? Do the employees really kill the ride? I had a bad experience too but that didnt effect my rating to drop it to a three!

Laser is not rough, its ice smooth, smoother than Hulk at IOA from what I remember. The turn after the two loops is pretty bad considering that it is taken so fast but that is it really. And the sound added to the experience for me. I almost had a heartattack when I saw the 3 lol.
Hercules on 9/27/2005 6:46:26 PM said:
^^ Weird standards for roughness and airtime, and basically any aspect of any ride. Horizons, that turn is bad, but the last turn is the worst, but I love getting slammed anyway so it is ok by me.
Canobie Coaster on 9/27/2005 6:56:45 PM said:
I honestly didnt find the Rock "N" Roller Coaster, or the Steamin Demon that rough. I have only been on 12 roller coasters, but Thunderhawk isnt as rough as two other wooden roller coasters I have ridden. The Zoomerang at Lake Compounce was very rough in my opinion. The operating procedure and operators deduct the rides rating by 3. The ride itself is a six, but plus those two things, it brought it down to a 3.
BobFunland on 9/27/2005 7:23:11 PM said:
So, first the rating was a 6, then it was a 3, but now you are saying that it should be a 4 except that those two things brought it down a point when earlier you had said that those two things deduct the score by 2? What?

I can see your point now about it being one of the roughest coasters you have been on, but I just think that you took that into account too much.

I can handle roller coasters with a little roughness like Excalibur, but this one was a little too rough for my taste. I also hated the Wild Cat at Hersheypark, because I found it way too rough for me.
Hercules on 9/28/2005 9:57:17 AM said:
Well, I have heard people say that Wildcat is a little rough. That I can deal with. But like B. Fun said, ride some more Arrows and Vekomas and take two of these and call us in the morning.
Canobie Coaster on 9/28/2005 7:43:57 PM said:
From what I hear, most Arrow mega loopers, and Vekoma coasters are rough, torture machines.
Hercules on 9/28/2005 8:02:00 PM said:
And that was our point. Glad to see that you caught on.
Horizons12 on 9/28/2005 9:10:12 PM said:
Vekoma SLCs are torture devices, but normal Vekoma coasters all depend on what type of train is running on them. Arrow trains on Vekoma track is like riding in an earthquake while the Vekoma trains are VERY smooth.
Hercules on 9/28/2005 9:26:05 PM said:
I actually enjoy Vekoma Boomerangs. I know Im in the minority there. I actually found Zoomerang at Lake Compounce to be too smooth. I was hoping to get knocked around a little more on that to tell you the truth.
Horizons12 on 9/28/2005 10:51:39 PM said:
I like them too, as long at they have the Vekoma trains.
Canobie Coaster on 9/29/2005 6:00:06 AM said:
Vekoma junior coasters are also smooth, like the Barstormer at the Magic Kingdom.
