Review of Apollos Chariot @ Busch Gardens Williamsburg
1 Rating Posted by: therock on 6/13/2005 5:39:00 PM
I rode Apollos Charriot during my recent trip to BGW with my wife. I must admit that in my frantic rush to ride everything in site before days end, I quivered a bit when we walked by Apollos Charriot and my wife pointed to it as a ride suggestion. "I might be afraid of it", I said in a near-whisper so as not to be heard by passers-by. The first drop seems very intimidating, and it feels just as intimidating as it looks. The view from the top of the first drop is truly incredible, and the minimalist restraint methodology applied on this coaster really adds a big fear factor to the ride. I noticed the touches one by one: the single lap bar with no shoulder harnesses, the lack of side walls, the raised seats. All of it added up to a true moment of fear that would not go away until the first drop was over. When the train began its 65 degree descent, my organs shifted back to my spine as expected, but on other coasters that I have ridden, this organ shift is still happening when the train pulls out of its nose dive. On AC, my organs finished shifting, and we were only half way down! This coaster is a monster. It is fast and high, and the airtime was incredible. Of course, being a novice, I did not even know the term "airtime" at that point, but I wondered what they call this feeling of euphoria that I kept experiencing over and over on AC. The theming was incredible from the train to the queue, and BGW has incredible landscaping which added to the excitement of the ride. It was as smooth as any coaster that I have ever ridden. Although no ride is perfect, this one was close, so it gets a 9. A coaster with airtime and drops as good as AC, but with added inversions might get it to a 10, but I am reluctant to give anything a 10, because that is pure perfection in every way, and I just dont think that exists. At least, I havent found it yet. If you have never ridden something this high, you must do it (health concerns permitting). The feeling of accomplishing this goal will make you so proud of yourself, despite your inability to walk correctly for a minute or so after your first ride.

Inversions dont always add to a ride Id take a healthy helping of airtime over a slew of inversions any day

Hey fergusonat. You are probably right. I am still a novice and am here to learn. I didnt even know the different types of inversions until I recently did some research on the topic. I will say this. AC was a heck of a comeback coaster for me to choose after not riding for many years! I guess coasters are like cars. I am the type of person who would choose the luxurious Bentley over the raw power of a Ferrari if I had such available funds, so I should probably have the same mindset for coasters. AC is much smoother and built for higher standard fun that simply loading up a coaster with inversions, so I might have to reconsider putting AC above Alpengeist. Ill have to go ride them again first. Thanks for your thoughts!

Hey, dont change your opinion just because of what I like. There are many coaster enthusiasts that prefer multi-inversion coasters to airtime-machines. Im not one of them, but if you are...hey, Im not stopping ya I love inversions just as much as the next guy, believe me, but I definitely dont take away from a ride if there are no inversions

Good review, ride em all then come back in a few years and give this one a 10. It is a wonderful coaster.

Hey vbarbieri, I probably will give it a 10 in the coming years. Right now, I dont give any ride a 10 because I dont consider any ride to be totally perfect, but I am working on revisiting that rating approach because no ride will ever be perfect and that makes the 10 rating totally useless to me which is a bad way to approach this. I will probably start eventually using a relative scale rather than an absolute one, but I need to ride more coasters first, as you say, so that I can more accurately pick the coaster by which all others will be judged on my scale. It might very well be AC. Who knows?

Hey fergusonat, Im not changing my opinion based on what you said, Im just conceding that you are more experienced. One day, I will ride them both again and get back to you. It also helps that now, I actually know what airtime is, so I can look for it on AC rather than being surprised by it. Thanks for all the good comments!

this ride is good but your making it sound like its the best. i prefer a bigger hyper as in nitro its 60 feet taller than apollos chariot and the drop is only slightly bigger but its just alot scarier. its good but nitro has more elements is better.

Yet you have Apollos ranked higher than Nitro in your top 10? I dont see how Nitros drop is any scarier, they are both about the same except for the pre-drop and Nitros picks up a bit more speed and is a bit more intense but whatever.

I prefer AC drop to Nitro. It seemed to pack more Air. Course I lek BGW so much better then GADV it could have just seemed better.

Havent been on Nitro yet, but I cant imagine it containing the intense airtime that Apollo delivers throughout the ride. But oh well, I cant talk until I have ridden both, which hopefully will be next year

I am just curious as to how many people notice a difference in terms of quality of airtime between Nitro and Apollos Chariot. According to some AC has the best in the world, but how much different is it? I rode AC so long ago that I kind of forgot how the airtime was.
