Review of The Racer @ Kings Island
1 Rating Posted by: vekoma88 on 1/29/2005 7:00:00 PM
i will give this ol 1972 classic a 9. i am more of a steel coaster fan, but i always manage to ride this coaster. maybe mainly because it is the first ride we HAVE to ride because this coaster has a lot of sentimentle to my mom. this was her first roller coaster and so we have to ride it as the first ride of the day. when i do ride it, i prefer backwards. it isnt nearly as rough and its more thrilling that way. this coaster has reasonable airtime and it is fast (about 60mph which really isnt that bad ) but all in all, i have a spot for this coaster too.

Great review - I love that your mom still gets a kick out of riding the Racer - it goes back a good bit to the old Coney Island days (its changed, but bits of it were part of the Shooting Star), and its neat that she appreciates it so much. Welcome to the site!

Ah, Coney Island of the west, up there with Coney Island NYC and Riverview Park as gems in the pre-corporate era. So many historic woodies resided there, though I had never heard that the Shooting Star is part of the Racer, which is a cool bit of info. The Racer is one of those coasters that may not be the best, but I certainly want to ride it for the historical aspect of it. I figure it would probably be along the lines of another Allen/PTC creation that I like, the Great American Scream Machine. Man I wish I grew up in a park like the Kings Island of the 70s...

Bob, did you ever see that episode of The Brady Bunch when they went to Kings Island? It was filmed during the parks first season, and boy, has that place changed...

No, unfortunately I didnt grow up in the golden ages that was 70s television, and I have yet to catch it on Nick at Night. However, I think it would have to be pretty good to top National Lampoons! Ill try to see it someday, now that I know such an episode exists.

I saw that episode about a year ago. The park looked pretty nice... It only had 1 coaster at the time. Things sure have changed! I remember that they had little facts about the episode like "Guests had to sign a contract upon entering the park promising that they wouldnt stare at the group." The most intresting one was that the coaster car that the bunch had gone on wasnt locked properly and that they could have gotten killed!

I can see the headlines now... "Brady fans hopes destroyed as Bunch killed in Roller Coaster Accident" - now, thats news.

Just like the Brady Bunch show is a sort of time capsle for Kings Island, it is fun to watch the movie "Rollercoaster" which shows what its sister park, Kings Dominion, looked like around 1980.
