Review of Top Thrill Dragster @ Cedar Point
1 Rating Posted by: BobFunland on 8/3/2004 10:04:00 PM
Im giving TTD an 8, and though I have given dozens of coasters scores lower than 8, I am going to call it the most overrated ride in America. Im not trying to lower the rating, in fact, I was still considering giving it a 9. Anyway, I waited about 1.5 hours for this, just like MF and apparently, not too bad. The heartrate pumped quicker as we rolled towards the christmas tree (bonus: I liked how the 420ft tower itself had lights too). The green hit and before I knew it I was going 122mph and up a 420ft outward tophat. The crawl to a stop was nice- it provided a great perpective of Millenium Force, and down it went spiraling 270 degrees before leveling out and hitting the finish line and subsequent brake run. "Thats all? All of that hype and build-up for the past year and a half?". Needless to say that I was a bit disappointed, because I figured it would be one of the best rides of my life, and I didnt have it in my heart to take the Giant Dipper from Belmont Park or the Mindbender from SFOG off my list of the 16-second ride. Pretty weak when a ride with the hype of Armstrongs lunar landing fails to provide good reason to be put into my top 10. I cant see how I could rate this above Millenium Force.

You have a very good point. It is an awesome launch and up the hill but after that its over.

You have a really good argument here, BobFunland (god, I love that name...) - and defend your position on the matter very well. I hope folks dont get on your case for this review - I havent ridden TTD myself, but can see what youre saying. I cant wait to ride, but do fear thinking, "Is that it?"
larrygator on 8/6/2004 2:09:28 PM said:
good opinion and I respect it. However, for me that launch, lift and drop are so great it gets a 10 in my book, until someone else can create the same intensity and throw some other elements in also
BobFunland on 8/6/2004 4:18:29 PM said:
Thank you adriahna, but I hope that you do one day ride it. It still is a good coaster, but to me, not the best (or as good as its rated at least)

Probably next summer well make it back out to Ohio - the homeland is calling, and I havent been there in a few years. Cedar Point is such a great park - along with PKI (my alma mater) and Geauga, its definitely on the list to visit. Ah, good old Ohio...
BobFunland on 8/14/2004 1:38:39 AM said:
Well, when almost everyone else gives it a 10, it is news. Especially when people like me have been torn apart, but I made sure to provide reasons for my rating, not just say "It sucked", becaue it didnt, it was good, but not great.
sfo1 on 8/15/2004 12:23:44 AM said:
You know whats silly? I live around 2 1/2, 3 hours away from Cedar Point and have yet to ride Dragster. Were going later this summer/ early fall, and I cant wait. I am afraid Ill be wanting more, but I think the fast acceleration will be enough to satisfy me.
BobFunland on 8/15/2004 11:56:27 AM said:
And I still recommend riding it at least once. Its a good experience, the launch, the top hat and all, but I didnt think it was phenomenal or anything. But definately ride it at least once.
tacoking on 8/15/2004 10:07:38 PM said:
I thought the ride was awesome...I love the launch, the height, the airtime...it was all great.....
BobFunland on 8/15/2004 10:18:48 PM said:
Well, to relate to one thta I now youve been on, I liked the Hulk a lot more because it had a cool launch and initial inversions- then it went on to a great layout, and it was that much better because I felt that it was more complete. Dont forget that 7 years ago, people hyped and said that S:TE was amazing and the ride of a lifetime, and now, I personally didnt like it and is consistently gets average reviews, at best. Wait 5 or so years until TTD ges older and the novelty wears off. I bet MF will reign in ratings by then
tacoking on 8/16/2004 3:05:35 PM said:
Rides are only up at the top until something better comes along....so until something better comes, TTD and MF, and a few others, will be a top the ratings chart.
MagnumMan on 8/16/2004 6:45:41 PM said:
Your last post, BobFunland, coincidently, is almost identical to what I said about Hulk in my review on the ride. One more thing we have in common...BTW: I agree. Once people actually experience the ride and it becomes more than just looking at a picture or listening to stats, the hype will go down. TTDs hype seems to be doing just that and rightfully so. It really doesnt have the full package and a coaster that doesnt shouldnt be in the #1 spot.
tacoking on 8/16/2004 7:14:44 PM said:
Well hype dies down for every coaster.....
BobFunland on 8/16/2004 7:56:55 PM said:
Well, some coasters do preserve over years, with examples including the Beast and in my opinion, Millenium Force.
MagnumMan on 8/22/2004 5:26:50 PM said:
Millenium Force is so flawless, I dont think the hype will ever die. Its touches on almost everything that can make a coaster good.
BobFunland on 8/22/2004 10:10:10 PM said:
Id like to know who gave me a bad review and why.
tacoking on 8/23/2004 7:54:41 PM said:
There is only one "flaw" with MF - not much airtime.
MagnumMan on 8/23/2004 8:01:36 PM said:
True. Thats what I meant when I said "almost" everything. But, I have to say, the very few moments of airtime that were on the ride I enjoyed...and there were basically only two...the great floater airtime on camelback 1 and the excellent ejector air on camelback 2.
BobFunland on 8/24/2004 8:10:55 PM said:
The airtime could have been better, but its not like were looking at a out-and-back woodie, nor a hyper whos main objective is air (S:RoS for example). This ride is build upon speed and height.
MagnumMan on 8/24/2004 9:00:28 PM said:
I know and I dont have a problem with that at all. Its actually what what made the ride so good. I mean all rides have pros and cons. Some just have more of one than the other. Millennium Force obviously has more pros.
BobFunland on 8/25/2004 1:20:26 PM said:
It still ticks me off that I can give substantially better defense of my position and rating than 90% of the reviews here, and yet because someone out there just LOVES TTD, thye decided to give me a bad review and they wouldnt tell me who they are.
MagnumMan on 8/25/2004 8:18:15 PM said:
That happens...people do that all the time. Thats why I think you should give your name and a reason when you rate a review. Agree?
BobFunland on 8/25/2004 8:25:56 PM said:
I definatly agree- its cowardice.
tacoking on 8/25/2004 10:06:05 PM said:
People do it because they think its funny. Dont worry about it.
larrygator on 8/26/2004 1:41:41 AM said:
dont worry about it I went over 18 months before I got my first "Bad" review. I wanted to know who and why but no one took credit for it. Your reviews are very insightful.
BobFunland on 8/26/2004 10:49:38 AM said:
Thanks, and I agree, if its really a bad review, then yea, give it a bad one. Like the people who gave Skooters a 1 without even riding it...
3r1c on 8/26/2004 1:54:43 PM said:
Someone obviously hates me - I have 37 bad reviews. LOL
sfo1 on 8/26/2004 2:02:46 PM said:
Hey, maybe freebird was mad at you for your political views and gave you a ton of bad ratings. , jk.
BobFunland on 8/26/2004 2:43:30 PM said:
I rarely give bad ratings, but I give a lot of good ratings. Ratings are overlooked and underused it seems.
tacoking on 8/26/2004 4:20:27 PM said:
I dont even rate....
bumprnugit on 8/26/2004 10:54:21 PM said:
BobFunland, you get a good rating...ratings should be based on the content and quality of the review rather than if you agree with it or not. There are too many reviews that are barely a full sentence, and the goal seems pretty clear to get in as many posts as possible. A quantity over quality mentality really lowers a persons credibility. And after all, this is "Theme Park CRITIC", not "Oh my god this ride is grate [sic]". Thanks for a real thought-out opinion and honest critique.
BobFunland on 8/26/2004 11:01:29 PM said:
Thanks- I dont know if youve ridden it yet, but I would still suggest it. Above all its unique, and certainly worth a long wait at least once. Its still good, but I think that some people see that since I didnt give it a 10, they automatically think that I hated it. People have been arguing for the past year and a half that it is Sooooo great, and that nothing will tough it. Well, you know something guys, there are a lot of great coasters out there, and TTD definatly doesnt reign tall over every other coaster.
BobFunland on 8/28/2004 9:50:46 PM said:
Did you guys see who finished above TTD in the Golden Tickets? Millenium Force of course!
Danny on 8/29/2004 1:30:40 PM said:
Ive ridden Dragster twice (on two separate visits to CP) and both times I was left amazed by the launch. It just gets so fast so quickly! Its not the best coaster Ive ridden, but definitely in my top 10. I could easily see why you didnt love it though. Its short, and it left me thinking "I shouldve taken another ride on MF instead."
larrygator on 8/29/2004 2:01:57 PM said:
Here are my two cents again. If Im condemned to death and can have only one ride on one steel coaster I pick TTD. If I have to choose one steel coaster and that choice will be the only one I can ride for the rest of my life, I pick MF. I have no problem with you giving it an 8, you more than justified it in writing.
embalmer on 8/29/2004 3:02:29 PM said:
Your ratings are fine Bob and you shouldnt have to defend them much. The launch on ttd is unequaled but other than that it simply cant rank with other top coasters, even the twist and 400 foot drop are inferior to MFs first drop in my opinon.
BobFunland on 8/29/2004 8:22:57 PM said:
But Ill defend em to the death. Its an awesome laund, but Im just not a fan of the lack of elements. I still liked it, I just thought it is overrated.
MagnumMan on 8/31/2004 7:46:27 PM said:
I agree with what most of you are saying. As Ive said before, the launch is intense, powerful, and beats out almost any launch of any coaster...ever...accept for maybe Incredible Hulks, but thats for another reason. Anyway, TTD beginning cannot be matched but it still left me feeling like the next ride I needed was Millenium Force and not TTD. Its simply because it cannot match up to a full length coaster or any coaster that has a variety of elements in its course. If I had to compare it to anything, Id have to say its a step above Superman:The Escape...and I was never, ever excited to ride that, unfortunately.
BobFunland on 8/31/2004 8:14:59 PM said:
Oh, I think its more like a flight of steps above S:TE because it has such sluggish acceleration. The 7 secs of airtime is cool, but I passed on a 2nd ride.
MagnumMan on 9/1/2004 8:28:02 PM said:
I bet you did...but on that note, I passed on a 2nd ride for TTD too...
papa1958 on 9/1/2004 8:49:02 PM said:
Bob raises an interesting category of the "most overrated ride." For a while the trolley ride at Lake Compounce had all 10s, which made it the most overrated on this site. Now that Trolley has a more reasonable rating (in the high 8s), my nominee for the most overrated ride would be Mission: Space at EPCOT.
MagnumMan on 9/16/2004 10:37:13 AM said:
And why is that?
papa1958 on 9/16/2004 11:21:23 AM said:
Please see my recent review of this ride on this website. In sum, I found the ride to be just "ok," because although wee themed it was not all that interactive and not that much fun.
