Review of Killimanjaro Safaris @ Animal Kingdom
0 Rating Posted by: benleibo on 1/5/2004 3:26:00 PM
This ride really isnt anything special. Just because its disneys newest park and they have animals people think its great. There are plenty of smaller parks that have better safari rides. At Busch Gardens Tampa you can see FAR BETTER ANIMALS by train, Rhino Rally ride, or skyride. At Six Flags Great Adventure by me you can drive through in YOUR OWN CAR and see giraffes, lions, etc UP CLOSE. This one doesnt live up to its name. This had a lot of potential but its really not a good one. Long waits most of the time too.

But the thing is: a place that lets you drive your own car through it is likely to treat the animals as... well, just theming on an amusement park ride. Thats contrary to what a zoo SHOULD be doing, which is encouraging appreciation of the animals. A naturalistic setting, like the one on KS, works far, far better to achieving that end.

I agree that the cars at Great Adventure are a little invasive to the animals and a lot of visitors treat them badly. However, Busch Gardnes gets you relativley close without that. Also, Busch Gardens animal area has that "small park" zoo feeling.

Who says Disney treats the animals badly?

Nobody ever said that. I think praxis was aluding to the fact that the drive-thru safaris are more of "attractions" than for the animals. Also, I agree that some idiot always feeds popcorn to the animals or something.

Pretty much so, benL. And to MC... so far as I can tell, Disney does take the care and presentation of the animals seriously, and does a pretty good job. You can debate the overall merits of Animal Kingdom. On the downside, having a zoo/theme park combo, kinda reduces the animals to the level of theming - regarded much like the creepy interior of Tower of Terror, plus the messages a zoo should be trying to impart can easily get lost when its thrown in among thrill rides. But on the upside, AK does mean lots of people will see the animals, and Disney has turned its considerable amount of $$$ to crafting some lovely habitats, and as I said, they do seem to be trying, at least. On the safari, for example, the chase at the end is palpably fake, a jarring bit of make believe after the real splendor of this recreated slice of the Serengeti. But at least they were trying to call attention to the very real problem of poaching, so A for effort.

I would have to agree with most things you mentioned in your comment, Praxis. I have nothing against the way Disney treats the animals or the habitat I just didnt enjoy the ride, its nothing going that deep.

I think like "Tomorrowland Transit Authority" the safari accomplishes exactly what it is trying to do. I think a 5 is a little harsh but I have never been to the other place to compare.
