Review of The Comet @ The Great Escape
2 Rating Posted by: bumprnugit on 11/8/2003 3:34:00 AM
Despite some less than complementary remarks about the park, one must take into consideration what may have become of this coaster if not for Charlie Wood. After having to put up with the Town of Queensburys crap over this ride, he took to heart the advise of coaster enthusiasts and preserved this ride better than anyone could have ever pictured in their wildest dreams. Evidence this with the fact that the station is split into front and rear seating cues, the preservation of the original layout, and the hiring of the firm from Montreal that tracked the ride (their name escapes me at this writing.)Would Six Flags put this much care into a relocated ride? As when it ran at Crystal Beach in Ontario, Canada, The Comet flies over every hill and offers some suprising lateral Gs throughout its course. The only thing missing is Lake Erie to the right of the lift (and the PTC trains w/o seat dividers, stationary lapbars and no seatbelts.) A solid top ten ride in my opinion.

It has a great history and the story of it being saved is very nice and sentimental, but whats so awesome about the ride itself? Im afraid I just dont get all of the 10s. People rank it like its the only woodie theyve ever ridden.

Lin48 - I appreciate the feedback, but your critique is very vague; whats not great about this ride? Are you a steelie fan? I rode this when it was at Crystal Beach, so there is a lot of sentimental value for me, but I still assert that it is a top five ride. You need to elaborate if your going to have any credibility.

Well, I do have to admit that its been a while since Ive been on The Comet. Even when I wrote my review it had been a while, so I dont remember specifics about the ride. However, I can remember how heavily promoted the rides addition to the park was and I rode it when it was still new to The Great Escape. I was not very impressed then. I can recall that. In fact, I can recall being somewhat disappointed. I dont think that I was expecting too much, but I didnt find it to be anything worth boasting about. I guess any roller coaster that a park adds will merit advertisement (as Im sure its a big investment and likely a big addition to the park itself), so maybe thats why Id call it overrated. But like I said, I cant remember thinking "Wow, this is really great". My favorite woodie is Boulderdash at Lake Compounce, so maybe I have extravagant taste, but there are still other wooden rollercoasters Ive been on at various other parks that I like more than The Comet and are more memorable as well. I hope this is a decent justification.

Thats fine...I wont argue with with your opinion, thats why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I havent been on Boulder Dash yet, even though the park is less than 2 hours away. I really look forward to getting there as that ride is highly praised. Thanks for the follow up.

I think you will find that that the Boulder Dash is a lot more fun than the Comet.
