Review of Tower of Terror @ Disney-MGM Studios
3 Rating Posted by: Danny on 5/24/2003 3:07:00 PM
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is the secondo best non roller coaster attraction Ive experienced, just slightly behind Spiderman at IOA. Yet, I can not stress enough how incredible this ride is. Its got some of the best theming Ive ever seen and the overall atmosphere of the ride is amazing. The outside queue is very well done, with the 1930s and 40s jazz music playing in the backround, and the massive palm trees towering overhead. The overgrown shrubs and trees, as well as the broken fountains and statues add to the spookiness of the environment. The inside queue is among the best Ive ever seen...its so extremely well detailed its almost unbelievable. The clip you watch on the tv that comes on with a bolt of lightning is really creepy, and helps set the mood for the rest of the attraction. The boiler room setting is excellent for the loading platform, and is one of my favorite parts of the experience. Has anyone besides me noticed that there is a plaque on the wall that is signed by the devil? Even the bellhops on this ride are...well...creepy! The elevator cars have only seatbelts that hold you in, and no matter where you sit in the elevator, you have a great view of the action. The sights, sounds, lighting, and ghosts you see and hear while traveling to the top of the tower are almost undescribable...especially when the elevator comes out of its shaft! After seeing the doors open to the second elevator shaft, you hear some pretty music that sounds as though it came from a harp and then Rod Serling saying "...in the tower of terror..." Suddenly, your elevator is pushed up dozens of feet very quickly and stops at the top of the tower for a brief moment (just long enough for you to look out the window) and then drops down to the Earth over and over and over again. The Tower of Terror is by far the greatest attraction at WDW, and is my second favorite non-coaster attraction anywhere. This ride alone is worth the money you pay to get into the park. Its simply an amazing ride! (Sorry for writing such a long review, )

Hello! I saw your review and as it is the most recent and well detailed I thought I would address you. I have always been a BIG chicken when it comes to certain rides. I like most, but I HATE roller coasters (with the exception of like Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain and the Disney ones) and I have always chickened out of drop rides. Im going to MGM in a few weeks with my boyfriend and his family who all say I should ride this even though they know I am terrified of such things. I am considering it since we will be in an enclosed car instead of dangling freely like other drop rides. I do, however, love rides like Splash Mountain and Jurassic Park. I dont know if you have ever ridden those, but if you have, how is the drop on the Tower of Terror in comparison to those? I know its different since in the tower you drop in an upright position as opposed to rides where you go over the edge of something, but how horrifying is it during the drop? Sorry for seeming like a big chicken but I AM. LOL I am terrified of this damn thing but these people wont let me rest until I ride it, and a part of me wants to since I chickened out when I was 12. Thanks!

You should definitely ride it Andrea02! The drops arent the real focal point of the attraction--its the theming and scenery and music and bellhops and the entire experience. The drops are pretty cool though 8) The drops arent really that bad...you dont start dropping in pitch black darkness or anything. You know youre gonna drop when the windows at the top of the tower open and you look out. Then, you drop. The drops are in darkness, kind of like Space Mountain, but there are many drops. Most of them are real short, but there are a couple really long ones. All they have to hold you in is a seatbelt, so youre guaranteed airtime. Its difficult to compare TOT with SM and JP and all I can say is that the drops are much more intense than those because Tower of Terror drops you over and over and over and over...

One more thing, my sister was horrified of drop towers and heights, and didnt want to go on TOT at first, but we made her, and she ended up loving it

Yeah, the ride isnt really all that intense. Its just plain fun.
