Chang is a steel roller coaster. It has 5 inversions. It is a stand up roller coaster. It was built by B&M in 1997. It is 154' tall, it is 4,155' long. It is fun, rerideable, has a large capacity, and long duration.

Easily the best coaster at KK, Chang has not yet succumbed to the roughness that seems to plague B&M stand-ups as they age, hopefully it will stay that way. The pacing of the elements is good, the first drop provides some decent air, and the entrance under the corkscrew is pretty cool. One of the few rides at KK that is worth waiting longer than half an hour for.

Chang - A True Diamond in the Rough
Chang is an exception in more ways than one. Its a stand-up roller coaster at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. That should be two big strikes against it. Stand-up coasters have a history of being uncomfortable and rough. Mantis at Cedar Point and Shockwave at Kings Dominion are two examples. And Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom widely considered at the bottom of the Six Flags barrel. Somehow, Chang not only bucked the odds, but it delivered the best ride Ive ever experienced on a stand-up coaster.

Like Mantis, Chang is located in a sort of marshy area in Kentucky Kingdom. I saw several laughable, strange, and unique things at SFKK. I got a kick out of the run of the mill restraint buckle latches that had "FOR MARINE USE ONLY" etched into them. What the heck could that mean? Well, if the buckles were good enough for the Armed Forces, I figured they were good enough for me.

After the 15 story climb, youre treated to a 144 drop. A large vertical loop follows, then a dive loop, and next theres a transitional turn. After the turn, the train roars up and into an inclined loop. Inclined loops are similar to vertical loops, just bent to one side. A brake run is followed by a two corkscrews. The first corkscrew flips riders over a support building. And the second corkscrew was the highlight of the ride for me. It begins low, hugging the ground. If you sit on the outside edges of the four across cars you feel like you can reach out and touch the ground. After dipping down to the ground you swoop back up and spiral over the queue line. Then the train careens back to the station.

The entire ride is smooth and fun, the way it was meant to be. I have no idea how Chang offers such a different ride than Mantis does when they are pretty similar, but Im glad I didnt swear off stand-ups after that painful experience at Cedar Point. Chang definitely defies the odds and delivers a great ride. Finally, a stand-up coaster that makes the case for stand-up coasters. Chang is the jewel in the not so shiny crown that is Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. Final Rating - 8.5 (Great - Approaching Excellent)

This is one of my favorites and use to be my very favorite untill I went to CP (lol). O really enjoy it and this year (2007) they have made it netter by having it slow down alot less at the praking point about mid way, giving the second half a much faster ride.

I dont see why some people think Chang is rough. This is a excellent coaster that glides through its elements with excellent smoothness with little to no headbanging. The new paintjob gives it an excellent appearance.

it was sort of good but it threw me around like i was a fether blowing in the wind. the layout was awesome but it needs to be way smoother.

Great layout... great height and elements, and the least painful stand up I have ever ridden are the best things I can say about this coaster.

However, I still didnt enjoy it that much. To me, stand up = gimick. The park should have invested in a good Floorless or standard sit down.

I must say that I was dissapointed in Chang. Sure its a good coaster: Big, powerful, smooth, with some decent inversions and turns. Yet on both of my rides I found my self fighting the thing against headbanging and a lot of discomfort in my achillies. The first drop and surprisingly the loop are absolutly outstanding but the rest is all just okay in my book. A few sweet turns and some of the inversions were good, and the MCBR was not too much. Great pacing and legnth, but for whatever reason Chang just isnt good enough to be one of my favorite coasters. This also had a well landscaped queue line.

Chang was the only disappointment for me at Kentucky Kingdom. I am one of the more positive people in regards to Chang, so I was excited to ride its near-clone. Sadly, this piece of trash was the worst B&M stand up I have done in terms of headbanging. Even Iron Wolf and Vortex were more enjoyable in that aspect, but this does get an ever-so-slight nod over Vortex simply because it still has some nice power to it and it looks purty. Damned KK only ran 1 train the day I went, which was unfortunate as well.

I dont think it is that great for a stand-up coaster. I think Mantis is much better.
