Review of Wildcat @ Lake Compounce
4 Rating Posted by: Got_it on 11/1/2006 11:32:00 PM
This poor misunderstood roller coaster, hidden in the shadow of Boulder Dash. This year (2007) marks its 80th anniversary. To describe most other coasters people use words like: intense, fast, rough, etc. The Wildcat however I can only describe as "peppy". The Wildcat as a decent amount of speed for its little size. Not much on air time, but its there. This coaster does however have very good laterals, the best being on the second turn around. Over all the Wildcat is a nice little coaster, painted beautifully in all white, one train purple one red. Defiantly give it a try.

Im not thrilled with the magnetic brakes either. Its way more fun to operate with the old lever system, and two trains equal twice the speeches

haha, true

The coaster hasnt operated with a lever for years. Its still controlled by a computer just with one trains a skids. updating the brakes isnt a terrible thing. as for mags Ive only heard that over the last week or so and Surprisingly Jerry never said anything about using mags instead of standard fins.

ummm.... are you sure youre not thinking of another coaster?. Ive operated that ride thousands of times and have never seen nor heard mention of a computer. Theyres not one lever, but three- theres three sets of brakes. Theyve used the same system for at least the past 20 years, put this season theyve had more trouble than ever with the brakes not engaging and the train flying through the station, which is why theyre switching to magnetic ones. Im not looking forward to it cuz pushing a button wont nearly as fun as playing with the levers.

Were thinking of Defiant Lever controls. When i saw lever Im thinking Traditional hand pulled Wood Levers (like on Flyer comet or Coney Cyclone). what I that was a computer system is a Hydraulic control panel. Still an upgrade from what I though you were talking about.

Too bad they cant run the skids still, it adds a classic touch...
mrceagle on 11/5/2006 9:23:08 PM said:
i agree But the skids are harder to keep up and parts are more expensive. its just not a feasible option for most parks. I know that Canobie lake cant operate two trains again until they upgrade to something other then skids.

I thought they put Fins on during the 2005-2006 off season.
mrceagle on 11/5/2006 9:39:12 PM said:
Nope On the 2005-2006 off season they re-profiled the back turn to remove the harsh lateral Gs and to Fix parts of it that had Sunk a bit over the last 70 years.
Got_it on 11/6/2006 12:36:32 AM said:
Ohh, Someone told me that the two trains bumped each other, because of wet skids, and they put fins on for the 2006 seaon.
mrceagle on 11/6/2006 10:42:27 AM said:
There was a incident were the two trains bumped. This was do to operator Error. The control system at the time was a hand pulled hydraulic and the Supervisor messed up and the incoming train dumped the train on the lift at something near 5 mph. The coaster has operated with 2 train ever since. I have been told recently NH ride safety res tricks 2 train operation on any coaster with Skids. The park Worked on the coaster back in 2002 but only added a new Computer system and realigned the skids. this was done by GCI which also Did a New track profile for the coaster. That was Build BY M&V. M&V did the reprofiling on The back turn.

Ya it was quite a setback for the park regardless of the fact no one was actually hurt and the park has not had a ride related heath ever.

I rode the Cannonball in 05 and loved the lateral Gs. They werent anything I couldnt handle. Too bad they got rid of em

I havent ever been up there, but its on my list.

You like Wildcat better than the mountain coaster? wow.

Oh yeah. Hands Down.

ibluv Its still a good coaster and there are still good lats on the coaster. the lat they Fixed on that turn a few years back was hurting people. It was literally a 2G + lat. The fix is enough that there is a solid lat but not one that will kill you. the rest of the turns are original.
ibluv on 11/8/2006 2:33:30 PM said:
But I like the lats that kill, those are my fave kind...

Although I didnt hate Wildcat I could never imagine riding it more than twice a visit and Boulderdash is the only real reason I would return to that park.
Got_it on 11/8/2006 5:38:36 PM said:
You just dont appreciate the park for what it is.
coaster05 on 11/8/2006 5:55:27 PM said:
Thanks for telling me how I feel. I had a great although extremely busy day at the Lake, however being that your park is 12+ hours from my house the only reason I would come back is for Boulderdash.
Got_it on 11/8/2006 7:17:46 PM said:
When the park is full of people it sucks, Ill give you that. You should try it on a cloudy day during the week, its a really nice time.
coaster05 on 11/8/2006 7:23:35 PM said:
Again 12+ hours away. I would have loved to be there on a cloudy day and if I make it back it will definately be during the week.
mrceagle on 11/8/2006 10:54:21 PM said:
Well they had too many people complaining of back problems and a few threaten to sew. also The new Turn will stand up to more so when they do upgrade the brakes and return to two train operation the coaster will operate better. As for wildcat I;m with coaster05. Its a fun ride but I dont go to the park for it. I go for Boulderdash.
Got_it on 12/19/2006 10:02:47 PM said:
Most do, Althought I would rather ride Wild cat, I will admit that Boulder is a better ride.
