Review of Whip @ Dorney Park
0 Rating Posted by: BobFunland on 5/30/2005 12:08:00 PM
Having never seen one in person, Dorney gave me my first Whip, and so far, my favorite. The cars were comfy, the ride was pretty long and the whipping action was sweet. The line wasnt too long, so unless its spilling out of the queue, take a spin on this classic (and hopefully never to be forgotten) ride.

I love these rides. Ive read somewhere that the original design is from 1914. The defunct Mountain Park in Holyoke, MA had a Whip, it was one of those things EVERYBODY went on. Im suprised that no company of today has ever come up with a modern version of this ride, its something so many enjoy! Its more than fast enough for thrill seekers, yet not a "puker" like some flats. Seems like if a new version was available it would be a hit at all kinds of parks.

Yeah, this is an old one and something that is in very good condition. It was one of the rides that survived the fire back in the day.

I believe the version at Hershey is a new model since under the pavillion they have pictures of the orginal whip at Hershey.

If this is a new version of the Whip, does anyone know what company is producing them?

I believe Chance built the new Whip that Hershey has. It doesnt hold a candle to the old Mangels ride though.

Why is that, did Chance alter some basic part of the design?

There are a bunch of changes, some you would notice, others you wouldnt. The ride sits on concrete instead of steel plates. The cars are fiberglass, not wood and steel. The floor is not pitched down on the corners like on the original rides (most people dont even notice this).
