Anybody know how to get from O'Hare Airport to Six Flags Great America via public transportation?

I just went to the Chicago transit authority's website and used their trip planner.

Here is what I found -

"Your search for transit directions from O'Hare, Chicago to 542 N Route 21, Gurnee, IL 60031 (Six Flags Great America & Hurricane Harbor) appears to be outside our current coverage area. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Thanks, Scott. I was hoping maybe a local would have an inside tip. It's killing me to be less than 40 miles away with time on my hands, but even I can't justify $65 for a rental car, $20 for gas, and $15 for parking for maybe 3 or 4 hours at the park. Heck, if I could get there on back roads, I'd even consider renting a bike.

Looks like a really annoying way to get there. You should go for it if you have the time. I think you'll love Viper.

timberman-
that public trans labyrinth posted by ginzo seems like glorious fodder for a ridiculous trip report.

years ago i went solo to a wedding in lafayette louisiana using entirely public transportation (baltimore light rail, airplane, shuttle bus, passenger train, municipal bus = 20 hours including wait times). it was exhausting, but privately exhilerating in terms of absurd accomplishments.

^It's probably worth it if renting a car isn't feasible. SFGAm is a pretty nice park. I don't know if any of the rides are like "OMG GREATEST EVAR", but it's a very solid park nonetheless.

I am a local...and I can't help you much, unfortunately. I always drive to the park myself, and as you already alluded to, you are already pretty close being at O'Hare, but I can appreciate the absurdity of your renting a car in this scenario. I have always felt that many other cities around the country (and almost any major city in Europe) have much better public transportation than we do in the Chicago area. Sorry I can't be of more help, Timber.

^Next time I'll call you for a ride, Animan1.

Unfortunately, I never did get to SFGA. While traveling between O'Hare and the park via public transportation is technically possible, the less-than-40-mile trip takes approximately 3 hours each way, which would have left me with about 40 minutes to enjoy the park. Would Viper have been worth it? Maybe I'll find out some day. Sadly, I could not get my co-workers interested in renting a limo for a group trip, which would have been the most convenient, economical way to go, when all was said and done. I suppose I could also have tried thumbing it, but that's a little too Camp Crystal Lake for my increasingly risk averse self.

I did venture into the city, where I saw two cops stroll right by a group of guys smoking a big, odiferous blunt, literally under a neon sign. Then, on the train ride back to O'Hare, I and my co-worker were propositioned by "a licensed massage therapist" who coincidentally was headed our way and looking to pick up some OT. My neck actually was a little stiff, but only the wood-tracked she-devil can turn my head from Momma T.

Sounds like you had a nice stint in the Windy City. Come back any time!
